STATEMENT ON CHALLENGING DESCRIPTIVE METADATA

CSU Libraries’ Archives & Special Collections makes collection materials available online for the benefit of users around the world. Some materials contain offensive language and outdated depictions of people and communities. We strive to describe all materials, offensive or not, in a way that is accurate, aligns with CSU’s Principles of Community, and does not harm our researchers or people represented in our collections.

We acknowledge that descriptive standards and practice are not neutral and will continue to evolve. Revising descriptions to eliminate racist, sexist, homophobic, and colonialist language is a department priority. Donors, researchers, and other community members are encouraged to help us improve our descriptions by contacting us with questions or concerns.
