Sean William McGowan Fund

Sean William McGowan

Books! Books! Everywhere Books! That was Sean. Books shaped his personality. After learning to read at age four, Sean always seemed to have a book with him whether it was at home or at school. In the car, he usually had two or three books, reading some of each while on short or long distance trips. In second grade, a friend gave him The Hobbit (by J.R.R. Tolkien) to read. In third grade his passion for reading began with the The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which he read more than once. Over the years, Sean read science fiction, horror, history, short stories, English literature, philosophy, and translated books by authors from various countries. He would gladly have an intellectual discussion with whoever was willing to challenge him on various topics ranging from the meaning of life to which professional soccer team was the best in the world.

Sean arrived at Colorado State University in the fall of 2011 from Spring, TX, just north of Houston. His majors were English/writing and Psychology/ counseling and addictions. Because of his AP credits a minor in history was possible.

If Sean didn’t have a book with him, it was because he was playing soccer. His love of soccer began at the age of four. He played club soccer, including division 1 select, and high school 5A soccer. He refereed soccer games on the weekends and continued doing so in the Fort Collins community while at CSU. Sean also played football in high school.

Sean also enjoyed listening to various genres of music always researching new styles and new artists that he would gladly share with friends and family.

Sean was a deep thinker and wondered about the meaning of life. Through his Christian faith Sean’s gift of caring for others was prominent. He became a counselor to friends who needed a listening ear and encouragement, no matter what time of day or night. He gave the best hugs. He even gave his own paychecks to others in need.

The McGowan family hopes that Sean’s love of books and knowledge will be remembered through this established library fund.
