Ray Kogovsek, a native of Pueblo, has served Colorado as a U.S. Congressman, a State Representative, and a member of the Colorado State Senate. A graduate of Adams State College, Mr. Kogovsek began his lengthy political career as a deputy clerk for Pueblo County. He was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 1968 and then to the Colorado State Senate two years later. He served two terms, including several years as minority leader, before being elected to Colorado's Third Congressional District in 1978. Mr. Kogovsek served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. During his Washington tenure, he served on the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs (now the Resources Committee), which was very important to his expansive district that includes many federal lands and natural resource challenges. The Interior Committee also had jurisdiction over American Indian issues, which was important to the two Colorado Ute Tribes in his district. He focused his efforts on balancing responsible development and conservation of lands, water and resources and the relationship of the federal government as trustee to the nation's Native Americans. In 1984, he returned to his home state and established Kogovsek & Associates, Inc. He continues to serve as president of the firm. He is a member of the Pueblo Sister Cities Commission, the Colorado Forum, the Colorado Water Congress, the Colorado River Water Users Association and the National Water Resources Association. He serves on the community board of Wells Fargo Bank in Pueblo and is active in numerous civic efforts ranging from the arts to health and historic preservation.
