Established in 1891, the American Carnation Society has actively promoted the carnation industry in the United States. Technical methods pioneered by this organization have become standard practice for all greenhouse flower growers. This collection is comprised primarily of bound copies of minutes and procedures for the years 1891-1953. Also included are printed programs and schedules for AMCS conferences and conventions from 1938-1975.

The Agricultural Experiment Station was established as the original research component of Colorado's land-grant college. Even before classes began at Fort Collins in 1879, experimental research had been instituted on a college farm. The federal Hatch Act, passed in 1887, became effective in Colorado a year later. Funding enabled the college to establish regional substations, thereby allowing it to address distinctive local problems. The Agricultural Experiment Station functioned as the school's principal research arm until the 1950s, when other opportunities for federally sponsored contracts and grants, many unrelated to Colorado needs, changed the emphasis of scientific inquiry at Colorado State University. The Experiment Station, however, continues to function as an important agency committed to addressing Colorado problems. The Agricultural Experiment Station Collection encompasses records of this agency since its beginnings in Colorado. Records include project records, reports, office files and correspondence.

Founded in 1880, the Colorado Bee Keepers Association has been a source of information for professional beekeepers and hobbyists alike for over 100 years. Although beekeeping was practiced in Colorado as early as 1862, it was not until after the creation of the association that Colorado honey production began to make an impression on the state economy. These records consist of minutes, financial papers, and correspondence.

The Colorado Cattle Feeders Association was established in 1955 to gather, analyze, and distribute facts relative to the cattle feeding business. The Colorado Cattle Feeders Association's goals were to maintain the cattle industry on a sound economic footing through research, promotion and education. In 1998, the Association was restructured and became the Colorado Livestock Association (CLA). The collection files include committee reports, correspondence, minutes, news releases and newsletters.

Established in 1867 as the Colorado Stock Growers Association and undergoing numerous name changes, this organization became the Colorado Cattlemen's Association in 1949. Throughout its history the Colorado Cattlemen's Association has sought scientific knowledge about stock growing and marketing, and has lobbied to promote favorable governmental policies. It coordinates the activities of local cattlemen's associations and includes auxiliary organizations such as the Cowbelles and the Colorado Junior Cattlemen's Association. This collection consists of meeting minutes, correspondence, conference materials, committee reports, photographs, clippings, and the Cattleguard publication.

The Cooperative Extension Service was officially established by the Smith-Lever Act of 1914. Its mission entails extending knowledge created at the land-grant college campus to citizens throughout the state where the school is based. Although originally designed to serve the needs of Colorado's rural agrarian population, Cooperative Extension in recent years has added programs that appeal to urban citizens as well. The Cooperative Extension collection encompasses records of college-sponsored outreach programs since their beginnings in Colorado. It includes correspondence files, photos, publications and annual reports. Until the 1960s, county agents were required to file narrative reports, which when viewed over several decades, provide a picture of local problems and change.

The Colorado Farm Bureau was established in 1919 to coordinate the efforts of various agricultural organizations within Colorado. It has been actively involved in lobbying for the interests of agriculturists within this state and nationally through cooperation with the American Farm Bureau. The collection includes a complete set of Colorado Farm Bureau News from 1968-2000, as well as brief histories of the organization compiled in 1978.

The Colorado Flower Growers Association was founded in 1928 to support the production and marketing of greenhouse flowers grown commercially in the state. In 1979 the organization changed its name to the Colorado Greenhouse Growers Association to reflect the increasing diversification of the industry. The Colorado Greenhouse Growers Association merged with the Colorado Nursery Association in 2005 to form the Colorado Nursery & Greenhouse Association. The collection consists of documents pertaining to the Association prior to its 1979 name change and includes minutes from general, board and committee meetings, correspondence, newsletters, financial reports, clippings, scrapbooks and photographs. The Colorado Grain and Feed Association, founded in 1925, is a non-profit organization focused on the cultivation of commercial good-will and fellowship among grain and feed dealers and feed and flour millers. The collection documents the history and activities of the association and its members. Materials include minutes, newsletters, member directories, correspondence, scrapbooks and photographic materials, as well as information pertaining to the association's legal and financial matters and involvement in annual state conventions.

The Colorado Potato Growers Exchange (CPGE) was formed in 1923 to eliminate speculation and waste in the marketing of potatoes. Twenty separate groups banded together as a central statewide selling agency. The CPGE stabilized the potato market so effectively that it later added onions (1928) and pinto beans (1968) to its operations. The CPGE was the first statewide co-operative formed on a commodity basis. The majority of the records are minutes of the executive committee, copies of the newsletter, The Colorado Potato Grower, and several boxes of stock certificates for the Potato Warehousing Corporation.

The federal government authorized the REA in 1936, but it was not until 1948 that a Colorado association (CREA) was formed. The CREA oversees legislation, regulation and rural electrification, contributing to improved rural productivity and quality of life. This collection contains bound copies of Colorado Country Life, the association newsletter, as well as pamphlets and reports from the Colorado-Ute Electrical Association.

Colorado conservationists formed the Colorado State Forestry Association, also known as the Colorado Forestry Association (CFA), in 1884 to support the conservation, management, and renewal of forests through the dissemination of educational materials, promotion of forestry legislation, and creation of forest reserves. The Records of the Colorado State Forestry Association consists primarily of the correspondence of CFA president William G. M. Stone with prominent conservationists, government officials and educators of the early 1900s. In addition to correspondence, the collection contains clippings from Colorado newspapers and printed material from related organizations, as well as handwritten drafts of papers addressing a variety of forestry related topics.

The Colorado State Grange was established in the Colorado Territory in 1874 to give support and encouragement to rural and agricultural communities. This fraternal society remains active in supporting communities through education, emergency relief, and legislative activism. The collection contains financial ledgers, meeting minutes, scrapbooks, issues of the organization's newspaper Colorado Granger, correspondence and other material related to the Colorado State Grange operations.

Founded in 1946, the Denver Agricultural and Livestock Club actively fosters agricultural programs such as the 4-H Club, Future Farmers of America, the National Western Stock Show, scholarships, and local agricultural events. The objective of the Club is to foster closer relationships and acquaintances among individuals living in and around Denver interested in the field of agriculture and to promote agricultural and livestock projects. Collection materials include minutes, correspondence, financial statements, and membership directories.

The Gilpin-Jefferson Livestock Association, formally established in 1920, was created as part of the national organization and as an affiliate of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association, in order to represent local members in government and educate people about the cattle industry. The collection includes by-laws, minutes, legal and financial documents, correspondence, membership lists, printed material, and memorabilia.

Great Plains Finding Aid (111KB)
The Great Plains Agricultural Council was founded in 1946, merging the earlier Northern Great Plains Regional Agricultural Council (1938) and the Southern Great Plains Regional Agricultural Council (1939). Its purpose was to provide an organization for cooperation and coordination in dealing with key issues in Great Plains agriculture. Members included representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the experiment stations and the land grant colleges and their extension services in the Great Plains states. The Council sought to identify and evaluate critical issues, encourage and develop research and action on them, and represent the Great Plains agriculture in the region and the nation. The Council disbanded in 1996. The collection primarily includes correspondence, committee reports, minutes and publications.

Each new factory of the Great Western Sugar Company quickly became the hub of the agricultural community in which it was built. The Great Western Sugar Company, incorporated on February 27, 1905, was the dominant producer of Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska beet sugar for over sixty years. The Records of the Great Western Sugar Company consists of photographic prints, contact sheets, negatives, slides, audio and videotapes and motion picture films produced by company photographers. Some textual materials are also included in the collection.
