  • Art in Context a comprehensive, continually updated, and publicly funded clearinghouse of information on contemporary artists, their work and their dealers.
  • ArtNet.com commercial site containing listings for over 1,300 galleries, 36,000 works and 13,000 artists.
  • Biography and Geneaology MasterIndex (updated biannually) Comprehensive index to 12 million biographical sketches. Check Morgan Library holdings for individual sources. CSU affiliates only.
  • Biography Index scans 2,700 journals and 1,800 books on a regular basis. A good source to get information on a specific artist. Covers 1984 to the present. CSU affiliates only.

ArtLex comprehensive visual arts dictionary; includes definitions of more than 2,800 terms with illustrations, pronunciations, quotations, and links to Web resources.

Art Online (updates vary) online version of the monumental 34 volume print version with encyclopedia-like entries to major periods and themes in the history of art; includes over 41,000 articles, news, and, a hyperlinked alphabetical index. CSU affiliates only.

  • Art and Culture Online. ArtPromote. Art images arranged by theme, artists, ethnic/regional, periods/movements, mediums, decorative arts, design arts, type. See also link "About Using Images from the Internet. Links out to collections at museums, associations, etc.
  • Art Images for College Teaching produced by Allan Kohl from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, allows for browsing by chronology for western art with a separate category for non-western.
  • Artcyclopedia free Website maintained by John Malyon, which indexes major artists with brief biographical sketches and links to their works.
  • Art Project is powered by Google with images from over ten major art galleries (as of 2/11); type of image and number varies; expected to grow.
  • ARTstor new (CSU affiliates only). Database with over one million images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences. See ARTstor Policies at CSU for more information on access. See ARTstor for information about the database and Using ARTstor (PDF) for information on using it.
  • Bridgeman Art Library is a site with over 100,000 images of works in situ, architectural works, paintings and other museum holdings.
  • Ditto an indexed imagebase that retrieves thumbnails of registered images from a host of sources and ranks them by relevance.
  • Google Art Project artwork from multiple collections from around the world. Requires Firefox, Chrome, or Chrome Frame (IE8 does not work)
  • Google Image Finder a search engine indexing over 330 million images freely available on the Web.
  • Great Buildings Collection comprehensive database searchable by building name, place name or architect with biographical sketches and sources for further reading.
  • SPIRO free database of architectural images sponsored by and based on the holdings of the UC Berkeley Architecture Slide Library.
  • Visual Arts Data Service provided by the Surrey Institute of Art & Design and part of the Arts & Humanities Data Service, this project currently allows searching of over fifteen digital image project simultaneously and browsing by major subject area.
  • World Art Treasures browsable and searchable image bank culled from the over 100,000 slides in the Jacques-Edouard Berger Foundation.
