History

Colorado State University's strength in groundwater research evolved naturally from the state's early residents needing information about irrigated agriculture. Not long after irrigation engineering was established as a distinct course of study at the State Agricultural College (now CSU) in 1889, Louis G. Carpenter, the professor who taught the course, conducted research which led to Agricultural Experiment Station bulletin number 33, Seepage or Return Waters From Irrigation (1896), which was the first of the bulletins to concentrate on water flow below ground. Bulletin 180, Seepage and Return Waters (1911), also by Carpenter, furthered this research, as did several other publications, including bulletin 279, Return of Seepage Water to the Lower South Platte River in Colorado (1922) by Ralph L. Parshall.

In 1929, a program was initiated by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station "to determine changes in the water table in certain areas in Colorado where pumping for irrigation was important" (W. E. Code, Water Table Fluctuations in Eastern Colorado. Bulletin 500-S, p. 1). In the 1940s, studies were initiated in the South Platte Valley and Prospect Valley. Agreements between the U.S. Geological Survey and the state enabled more funding to flow to the Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (again, an earlier name for CSU) for groundwater studies. The studies primarily related to artificial recharge, observation wells and irrigation pumping.

The data, maps, charts, drafts, correspondence, photographs, final reports and reference materials that were produced by or collected for these groundwater studies over the years are what comprise the Groundwater Data Collection. CSU engineering faculty and staff contributing to the studies represented in this collection include Morton W. Bittinger, John Brookman, William E. Code, Harold R. Duke, Robert E. Glover, Robert A. Longenbaugh, Edmund Schulz, Morris M. Skinner and Daniel K. Sunada.

Acquisition

The Groundwater Data Collection was picked up by Water Resources Archive staff in June 2002 from the Engineering Resource Center on CSU's Foothills Campus, where the collection had been created and stored. A deed of gift was signed in August 2003 by Robert Ward, Director of the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute, and Robert Longenbaugh, Consultant Water Engineer and one of the collection creators, on behalf of the CSU engineering faculty.

Appraisal

The main appraisal criterion was that materials had to relate to CSU groundwater studies in order to be retained. Books and federal or state government publications not of a unique or rare nature were not retained. These items went through the normal library selection process to be added to the main stacks as appropriate. Duplicates of reports were not retained past a second copy. Printing negatives were discarded, as were most full-size versions of maps that had been reduced for publications. A bibliography of groundwater publications compiled on index cards and several printouts of computer programs were not retained.

Processing

The processing of the collection was completed in February 2004. Materials were removed from three-ring binders, envelopes and existing folders and inserted in acid-free folders. The majority of metal fasteners were removed and replaced with plastic clips as needed. Rubber bands and self-stick notes were removed. Newspaper clippings were inserted between sheets of acid-free paper. Loose photographs, negatives and slides were separated to the last series and inserted in archival sleeves, envelopes or folders. Existing slide sleeves were replaced with archival ones. The rolled oversized items were unrolled and stored flat if possible; otherwise they were stored in large tubes. Films remain in their original containers. Two items, one from the Parshall Collection, were added in March 2005.

Series Descriptions

Series I: Observation well data, 1928-1980 (7.5+ linear feet)

The study of groundwater in Colorado through the use of an observation well network was a long term project for the State Agricultural College of Colorado (now CSU) and its Agricultural Experiment Station. The program began in the late 1920s and focused on areas where pumping for irrigation was important. The data found here is primarily from the 1960s and 1970s. The materials are arranged in seven subseries, primarily by type.
Subseries A: Field copies, 1936-1976
This subseries consists of the data collection sheets which were taken to the field to record the water level measurements at the observation wells, typically in the spring and fall of each year from about 1962 to 1975. Many of the sheets have a small photo of the well site stapled to them. Some files also contain sheets of data collected by the USGS. In addition, there are occasionally county highway maps and data charts included. The files are arranged alphabetically by Colorado county or other geographic area.
Subseries B: Office copies, 1928-1975
This subseries contains data transcribed from the field copies in the previous subseries. The information is essentially the same, though written neater and on cleaner sheets. Photos are also attached as above. Besides the main data files there are also "dead" files, being the data sheets for destroyed wells. Files are arranged alphabetically by Colorado county.
Subseries C: Recorder data, 1953-1980
This subseries consists mainly of charts from recorder wells. Also included are a few memos and maps. The files are arranged alphabetically.
Subseries D: Data files, 1929-1975
The majority of this subseries is either well data collected by the USGS or data compiled for water-level reports from other sources in this series. The files are arranged chronologically.
Subseries E: Miscellaneous files, 1955-1975
This subseries contains some administrative files related to the observation well project as well as other miscellaneous files. Of note is a small box of file cards reflecting land owner permission to use their wells as observation wells. The files are arranged in alphabetical order.
Subseries F: Publications, 1958-1974
This subseries consists of publications that emerged as a result of the observation well data, including textual reports and maps. Also included are a few publications on the same topic, but not resulting from the project. Files are alphabetical by publication title.
Subseries G: Oversize, 1959-1967
The oversize materials consist of well data compilations, two versions of a chart labeled "Depth to ground-water level below land surface datum," and groundwater hydrographs. The materials are in no particular order.

Series IV: Arkansas Valley, 1899-1966 (0.75+ linear feet)

This series primarily documents the La Junta-Las Animas study conducted at CSU in the 1960s. The study focused in particular on groundwater/surface water interaction. The materials are arranged in two subseries.
Subseries A: Files, 1899-1966
Much of the material here relates to the La Junta-Las Animas study, including groundwater modeling data (1962-1965 study), or to the "Report of field work in the Arkansas Valley in 1914" written by farmer and U.S. Department of Agriculture irrigation engineer R. G. Hemphill. Material types include data, forms, reports and maps. Materials are in alphabetical order by folder title.
Subseries B: Oversize, 1925-1966
The maps, charts, drawings and hydrographs in this subseries generally relate to the La Junta-Las Animas study. Often there are USGS maps with annotations by the researchers. There are a few Bureau of Reclamation maps related to the Fryingpan-Arkansas project. The items are in no particular order other than separated by size for storage purposes.

Series V: High Plains, 1959-1980 (1.5+ linear feet)

The materials in this series primarily relate to the artificial groundwater recharge studies in the High Plains of Colorado. The principal study represented here was conducted on the Arikaree River near Cope, Colorado. Robert Longenbaugh was the principal investigator on the project, which began in 1964 with state funding to the Colorado Ground Water Commission, which subcontracted with CSU. The goal was to study the feasibility of recharging excess or flood waters to an unconfined aquifer. Longenbaugh was also principal investigator on an earlier study (1963) on playa lakes in eastern Colorado as well as a participant in a later study (1974) in the Frenchman watershed. Other studies found here relate to irrigation pump efficiency tests and pumping costs. The materials are arranged in two subseries.
Subseries A: Files, 1959-1980
The majority of the files here relate to the Cope recharge project, with the other projects represented in lesser quantities, including the electric analog model of the High Plains by Glover and Bittinger. As files came from more than one person, there may be duplication between files. Materials are arranged alphabetically by folder title. Material types include correspondence, memoranda, recorder charts, data, reports, maps and notes.
Subseries B: Oversize, 1961-1967
Five of the 22 maps in this subseries relate to the study on playa lakes. The others relate to the Cope recharge project or to observation wells. Additionally, two maps relate to the southern High Plains region. The maps are in no particular order other than separated by size for storage purposes.

Series VI: San Luis Valley, 1897-1980 (0.75+ linear feet)

CSU civil engineers began investigating artificial recharge in the San Luis Valley after the Rio Grande Water Conservation District expressed interest in 1978 and formed a committee representing several institutions. The materials in this series primarily relate to this study, and to some other issues in the valley as well. They are arranged in two subseries.
Subseries A: Files, 1951-1980
The majority of the files in this subseries relate to the San Luis Valley Ad Hoc Committee and its study of artificial recharge. Materials are arranged alphabetically by folder title, with committee files first, and files with well recorder charts (having roman numerals with two exceptions) at the end. Rolls of recorder charts are housed separately in a document box. Besides charts, material types include correspondence, memoranda, maps, data, proposals and reports.
Subseries B: Oversize, 1897-1949, n.d.
This subseries includes early maps of the San Luis Valley as well as maps specifically from the study related to sump drains. There are also a number of drawings related to a phreatophyte study. The items are in no particular order other than separated by size for storage purposes.

Series VII: South Platte Valley, 1929-1978 (3.75+ linear feet)

The CSU researchers did extensive groundwater studies in the South Platte Valley, especially in relation to Kiowa and Bijou creeks and the subjects of natural and artificial recharge. These studies are documented in the following five subseries.
Subseries A: South Platte miscellaneous, 1929-1971, n.d.
This subseries consists of materials related to the South Platte in general, or to projects outside of the ones that follow. A study on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal is well documented here. Much of the data also relates to the Fort Lupton-Henderson study. Material types include data, reports, maps and correspondence. Materials are arranged alphabetically by folder title.
Subseries B: Kiowa Creek and Kiowa/Bijou, 1959-1965, n.d.
There are two projects represented in this subseries, with very close relation. The Kiowa Creek natural recharge study (Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station projects 110 and 112) was conducted by Bittinger, Schulz and Longenbaugh from 1960 to 1964. Following from that, a study related to making the Kiowa/Bijou basins designated groundwater areas was conducted by Longenbaugh and Duke from 1965 to 1967. The majority of the material here is well data from the study area. Other material types include reports, maps and correspondence. Materials are arranged alphabetically by folder title with the exception of the files of well data at the end.
Subseries C: Prospect Valley, 1945-1968
The study of artificial groundwater recharge in Prospect Valley (Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station projects 105 and 112) was conducted in the early 1960s by Skinner. Olds Reservoir was the particular site studied. Material types include reports, data and maps. Materials are arranged alphabetically by folder title.
Subseries D: South Platte Ditch, 1959-1978
The South Platte Ditch (also referred to as South Platte Canal) recharge demonstration project was conducted by Longenbaugh from 1974 to 1977. The study area focused on the Sand Hill Lateral, near Merino, Colorado. Material types include data, notes, articles, reports, correspondence, charts and drawings. Materials are arranged alphabetically by folder title with the exception of recorder charts at the end.
Subseries E: Oversize, 1942-1969, n.d.

Series VIII: Miscellaneous, 1929-1977 (0.75+ linear feet)

This series is comprised of materials that do not relate directly to the groundwater studies of the previous series but are of significance. The materials are arranged in two subseries.
Subseries A: Files, 1929-1977
This subseries contains documentation on the College Farm drain, Spring Creek, Foothills rain gages, the Western States Water Council and two groundwater short courses. More significant are the files from two of the researchers represented throughout this collection: W. E. Code and Robert E. Glover. The Code papers show the history of early U.S. Geological Survey studies in Colorado and how Code felt about the USGS, as well as some 1940s Experiment Station budget information. The Glover papers include a partial draft of a book with M. W. Bittinger as co-author, well test analyses, early (1950s) notes on groundwater management, and some original work on analytic solutions to pumping impact on streamflows in an alluvial valley. Materials in the subseries include correspondence, memoranda, reports, charts and maps.
Subseries B: Oversize, 1947-1957
This subseries contains eight miscellaneous maps and charts, most significantly of Colorado A and M lands, the Parshall flume, and College Farm drainage. They are in no particular order.

Return to the Table of Contents

Series IX: Printed materials, 1912-1979 (4.5 linear feet)

This series is comprised of printed materials accumulated by the researchers for reference purposes. The materials were heavily weeded of common federal and state documents, but some remain for various reasons, as do the majority of the limited-distribution reports. Items related to states other than Colorado can be found here, as can some more general subtopics. The materials are arranged in four subseries.
Subseries A: Groundwater, 1936-1974
The materials in this subseries are primarily reports and publications on the subject of groundwater. The materials are categorized by state, with Colorado coming first and the rest alphabetically, followed by categories of general, management, legislation and models.
Subseries B: Surface water, 1923-1966
The materials in this subseries are primarily reports and publications on the subject of surface water. The materials are grouped by river basin, which are listed alphabetically.
Subseries C: Wells and pumps, 1948-1976

Series X: Visual materials, 1931-1979 (3 linear feet)

This series contains the extant visual documentation of the groundwater studies represented in this collection. The projects best documented here include the Kiowa Creek and South Platte projects as well as the Hele Shaw model study. The materials are arranged in three subseries by material type. Also see Series I, subseries A and B for photos of observation wells.
Subseries A: Slides, 1947-1979
The hundreds of slides that make up this subseries are visual depictions of the groundwater studies found in the earlier series. Significantly represented are Kiowa Creek, the San Luis Valley, and the South Platte artificial recharge project. Also included are a significant number of slides on well drilling and general irrigation structures and methods. Notably, a card index provides important information about the dates and contents of many of the slides. The original order, alphabetic by folder title, is maintained, with some slides found elsewhere in the collection inserted accordingly.
Subseries B: Photographs and negatives, 1931-1979
The photographs and negatives in this subseries are further visual documentation of the groundwater studies found in the earlier series. Significantly represented are the Kiowa Creek and High Plains projects. Of note are pictures related to the Hele Shaw model study. Materials are arranged alphabetically by folder title, with the items separated from other series filed at the end in series order.
Subseries C: Films and microfilm, 1945-1965
Three of the 16mm films in this series were shot from airplanes and document the South Platte River and Kiowa Creek in 1961 as well as the Cope project area in 1965. Four films document the Hele Shaw model study. The majority of the microfilm is Morgan County REA pump power data. The materials are in no particular order.
