Abstract: The Great Plains Agricultural Council was founded in 1946, merging the earlier Northern Great Plains Regional Agricultural Council (1938) and the Southern Great Plains Regional Agricultural Council (1939). Its purpose was to provide an organization for cooperation and coordination in dealing with key issues in Great Plains agriculture. Members included representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the experiment stations and the land grant colleges and their extension services in the Great Plains states. The Council sought to identify and evaluate critical issues, encourage and develop research and action on them, and represent the Great Plains agriculture in the region and the nation. The Council disbanded in 1996. The collection primarily includes correspondence, committee reports, minutes and publications.

History

The Great Plains Agricultural Council was founded in 1946, merging the earlier Northern Great Plains Regional Agricultural Council (1938) and the Southern Great Plains Regional Agricultural Council (1939). Its purpose was to provide an organization for cooperation and coordination in dealing with key issues in Great Plains agriculture. Members included representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the experiment stations and the land grant colleges and their extension services in the Great Plains states (Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming). The Council sought to identify and evaluate critical issues, encourage and develop research and action on them, and represent Great Plains agriculture in the region and the nation. To address the stated purpose of the Council it formed numerous committees and task forces, cooperated in the organization of workshops and conferences, and supported research in key areas over the years. Supported in large part by federal funds along with membership dollars, the Council voted to disband in 1995 when such federal support was lacking. Some final work to terminate the Council continued into 1996.

Scope and Contents

The Records of the Great Plains Agricultural Council consists of documents dated 1938-1996. The collection includes correspondence, committee reports, minutes and publications. A complete run of proceedings of the annual meetings is included, as are various other publications from conferences and research supported by the Council and its committees, including those dealing with such topics as water, wildlife, range and livestock management, range plants, drought, evapotranspiration, irrigation, and the Russian wheat aphid.

Acquisition

The Records of the Great Plains Agricultural Council was received from the Colorado Agricultural Archives in February 2004. The Colorado Agricultural Archives received the materials from Melvin Skold, Colorado State University, in 1996.

Processing

Processing of the collection was completed in June 2008. Paper clips and other clips were removed and materials were inserted in acid-free folders and reboxed.

Series I: Prior organizations, 1938-1954 (1.7 linear feet)

This series consists of records from the Southern Great Plains Agricultural Council, the Northern Great Plains Agricultural Council and the meetings they held jointly prior to merging into the Great Plains Agricultural Council. The series is arranged in three subseries.
Subseries A: Southern Great Plains, 1942-1954
This subseries contains records of the Southern Great Plains Agricultural Council, primarily minutes and meetings reports. Arrangement is chronological.
Subseries B: Northern Great Plains, 1938-1954
