Biography

C. E. (Carey E.) Vail came to the Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1909 as an instructor in chemistry and assistant chemist at the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station. He remained at the college until his retirement in 1945, and in the last 25 years of his career served as a research chemist at the Experiment Station. Vail was born in Industry, Illinois, on September 7, 1879, graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University and received an M.A. in 1909 from the University of Nebraska.

C. E. Vail married Hazel Emigh in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on July 29, 1926, and they had two sons, Arthur and Kenyon, and one daughter, Mildred. Vail died in Fort Collins on October 1, 1956.

Scope and Contents

The Papers of Carey E. Vail consists of documents dated 1870-1966. The collection contains some of Vail's professional publications, notes and clippings. The few publications cover such topics as vitamin content of alfalfa hay, carbon content of Nebraska soils, and aromatic guanidines. The notes are primarily lecture notes, and the clippings by Vail are largely for News Notes and are of a practical nature ranging from topics such as "snow bread" to poison antidotes. Also included are children's stories written by Vail for the family, family photographs, school yearbooks and other family documents.

Acquisition

The Papers of Carey E. Vail was received from Marti Anderson, Carnegie Branch Library for Local History, Boulder, Colorado, on December 17, 2004.

Processing

Processing was completed in May 2007, and included the removal of paper clips, straight pins, and placement in acid-free folders. Loose photographs were placed in sleeves in acid-free folders. Nitrate negatives were removed from the collection.

Series Descriptions

Series I: Professional materials, 1902-1937 and undated (0.75 linear feet)

This series consists of publications, course notes, and clippings written by Vail, primarily for News Notes published by the College's Extension Service. The few publications cover such topics as vitamin content of alfalfa hay, carbon content of Nebraska soils, and aromatic guanidines. This series consists of a variety of materials including family records, personal writings, and yearbooks.
Subseries A: Family files, 1910-1966 and undated
This subseries consists of records of births, deaths, marriages, and some family financial information, primarily concerning local taxes. Arrangement is alphabetical.
Subseries B: Personal writings, 1946 and undated
This subseries includes several typed children's stories, with two other typed miscellaneous manuscripts. Arrangement is alphabetical.
Subseries C: Yearbooks, scrapbooks, other publications, 1870-1949 and undated
This subseries consists primarily of school yearbooks, with one scrapbook of obituaries, and two miscellaneous publications, arranged alphabetically.

Series III: Photographs, 1897-1956 and undated (0.5 linear feet)

This series consists of family photographs primarily from the Vail family, but some as well from the Emigh family. Some are unidentified. There are also a few postcards. Arrangement is by family, followed by the miscellaneous items.

Series IV: Artifacts, 1896-1956 (0.5 linear feet)

The series consists of one box containing a "Memorial Record" and sympathy cards from C. E. Vail's funeral, as well as four diplomas. Two of the diplomas are C. E. Vail's, one belonged to Vail's wife, Hazel Emigh, and one to Mildred Marie Vail. Arranged with the memorial items first, followed by the diplomas in chronological order.
