- American Fisheries Society
(AFS), founded in 1870, is the oldest and largest professional
society is the oldest and largest professional society representing
fisheries scientists. AFS promotes scientific research, enlightened
management of resources, encourages a comprehensive education for
fisheries scientists and continuing on-the-job training, publishes
some of the world's leading fisheries research journals, and organizes
scientific meetings. In addition to these primary functions, the Society
has many other programs in areas such as professional certification,
international affairs, public affairs and public information.

Founded in 1883, the American Ornithologists' Union is the oldest
and largest organization in the New World devoted to the scientific
study of birds. Although the AOU primarily is a professional organization,
its membership of about 4,000 includes many amateurs dedicated to
the advancement of ornithological science.

(ASLO) traces its roots to the Limnological Society of America (LSA),
which was established in 1936 to further interest and research in
limnological science.
- Ecological Society of America
(ESA) is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization of scientists founded

among ecologists; raise the public's level of awareness of the importance

(NABS) is an international scientific organization whose purpose is
to promote better understanding of the biotic communities of lake

media and disseminating new investigation results, new interpretations,

is marine pollution monitoring and clean-up, channel sounding, as

The Fish and Wildlife Reference Service (FWRS) receives, indexes,
stores and distributes copies of reports produced by State fish and
wildlife agencies from research studies supported by Federal Aid in
Sport Fish Restoration Act and Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration
Act funding. FWRS also receives reports produced by the Anadromous
Fish Conservation Program, the Endangered Species Grant Program, and

(NCSE) as its primary Information Dissemination Program, the National
Library for the Environment is a universal, timely, easy-to-use, single-point

all participants in the environmental enterprise. This online library
includes directories of academic environmental programs, journals,
funding sources, meetings, job opportunities, news sources, laws and
treaties, reports, reference materials, and more. NCSE works to ensure
that users understand the context and quality control relevant to
all information provided. Included among the growing collections are
the Congressional Research Service Reports on the environment.

Data Center
The U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) holds the world's
largest collection of publicly available oceanographic data. The main
NODC facility is located at the NOAA building complex in Silver Spring,
Maryland. NODC Liaison Offices are collocated with major oceanographic
research laboratories in Woods Hole, Mass.; Miami, Fla.; La Jolla,
Calif.; Seattle, Wash.; and Honolulu, Hi. The NODC also operates the
World Data Center A, Oceanography.
