In May, 2005 the CSU library acquired a new database from the Readex Corporation presenting the US Congressional Serial Set for the first time in a full text electronic format.

The Serial Set has been in existence since 1817 and represents an ongoing effort to collect and preserve publications of Congress and many federal agencies.  For example, reports of government explorers, beginning with John Charles Fremont, can be found in the Serial Set.

However, the CSU print Serial Set has been in storage for many years, with individual volumes and publications not represented in the library catalog.  It is mammoth in size -- some 14,000 volumes and a quarter mile of shelving.

Readex intends to digitize the entire Serial Set and its predecessor, the American State Papers, by fall 2008, when the entire project will be full text from 1789 through 1980.  Present coverage is 1817 through 1869.  Not only is the text available but also maps and illustrations, including many noteworthy lithographs.

The database allows for full text searching as well as browsing by subject.  Many refinements are possible and often very helpful given the size and complexity of the Serial Set.
