This site is intended to provide Colorado State University journalism students, or anyone else, with information relating to the field of telecommunications as of July 2004. A fairly comprehensive list of resources from Morgan Library has been compiled to act as the foundation for the student's research relating to the topic. Web sites have also been cataloged which pertain to international telecommunications as well. In addition, some of these resources have been employed to create several statistical tables which are grouped by five different areas of the world, including Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America, The Middle East and Africa, and North America. Please click on a specific region below and a table of selected countries will emerge.

Culture Grams World Edition. GT15.C85 v.1-4 REF DESK

Gives a general overview of world cultures. There are brief descriptions of the communications capabilities for the countries of the world.

The Europa World Yearbook. JN1 .E85 REF DESK

This resource basically deals with the same communications/media information as the Regional Surveys of the World resources cover with exception to a comprehensive list of international organizations which includes information on the International Telecommunications Union.

Provides comprehensive statistical information on the communications media for most countries of the world. Also catalogs the principal daily newspapers and selected periodicals for these countries as well as the government/corporation titles for a country’s telecommunications and broadcasting agencies.

Statistical Abstract of the World. HA154 .S68 REF DESK

Each county has a section that profiles its production sector. A telecommunications section is provided which examines the technological capabilities for a specified country’s industry.

By the Numbers, Emerging Industries. HC59.15 .B98 REF

Chapter 10 covers a broad range of telecommunications topics including call centers, fiber optics, imports and exports, international markets, investment, phone cards, telecommunicating, telephone sets, and telephone capabilities.

CIA World Factbook. G 122 .W67 REF

Provides summaries of the geography, people, government, economy, communications, transportation, and military capabilities for the countries of the world. The communications sections give general assessments of a country’s telephone system and Internet usage.

Desktop Encyclopedia of Telecommunications. TK5102 .M85 REF

Telecommunications topics are explained in non-technical terms and span local and wide area networking environments as well as covering voice data, and video technologies. In addition, regulations and standards, industry trends, and the various organizations that have contributed to the evolution of the telecommunications industry are also addressed.

European Marketing Data and Statistics. HA1107 .E97 REF

Section 18 profiles the telecommunications industry for both eastern and western Europe. Statistical data includes Internet hosts/users, ISDN subscribers, digital main lines, telecommunications investments, international/national phone calls, and mobile telephone use among others.

Guide to the Worlds Major Emerging Economies. HC59.7 .B867 2000 v.1-2 REF

Reveals the different corporations that comprise the telecommunications markets in progressing countries and explains the current economic climate by elucidating recent developments in the business sector.

Industry Reference Handbooks, Telecommunications. HF5035 .D78 v.3 REF

Provides a detailed analysis of the telecommunications industry in the U.S. Topics include industry statistics and performance indicators, financial norms and ratios, a comprehensive company directory, mergers and acquisitions, and industry consultants among others.

International Marketing Data and Statistics. HA42 .I56 REF

Section 18 features a comprehensive examination of the information technology and telecommunication capabilities for the countries of the world through statistical tables. Categories include Internet usage, ISDN subscribers, digital mainlines, and capital investments in telecommunications among others.

Standard and Poor’s Industry Surveys. HC106.6 .S74 REF

Surveys the national telecommunications industry by analyzing industry trends, state of the business environment, and assorted statistical information. Includes an informative glossary on industry terms and also provides a comprehensive list of industry references.

Statistical Abstract of Latin America. HA935 .S8 REF

Part II has a communications section which profiles a number of different categories including newspaper circulation, telephone capabilities, radio/broadcasting receivers, data processing related equipment production, and computer usage. Most Latin American countries are represented and are displayed through comparative statistical tables.

Statistical Yearbook for Asia and the Pacific. HA4551 .S7 REF

Economic and demographic information is cataloged by the individual Asian country. Section VII reveals transportation and communications capabilities including telephone service, radio broadcasting, and television broadcasting.

UN Statistical Yearbook. HA12.5 U63 REF

Presents statistical information on Internet usage, telephone capabilities, cellular telephone subscribers, and newspaper publication information for the countries of the world.

Wiley Encyclopedia of Telecommunications. TK5102 .W55 v.1-5 REF

Profiles the technical environment of the telecommunications industry. This extensive resource provides an in-depth analysis of the operational components that foster and advance the field.

World Bank, The Little Data Book. HC59.15 .L58 REF

Gives brief statistical profiles for most countries of the world which includes a technology and infrastructure table for each country. Statistical categories include information on Internet use, computer ownership, and telephone capabilities.

World Press Encyclopedia. PN4728 .Q53 REF

Although this source does not directly address telecommunications, it does provide many useful informational outlets for journalists regarding the international media including press laws, censorship, state-press relations, news agencies, broadcast media, and electronic news media among others.

Worldmark Encyclopedia of National Economies. HC15 .W675 v.1-4 REF

Profiles the infrastructure, power, and communications sectors of every country in the world through comparative statistical tables and informational articles. In addition to communications, this resource also examines other economic components including government, industry, trade, and working conditions among others.

1998 Global Telecoms Tax Profile. HE7647 .G56 2nd 1998 Morgan

Examines the telecommunications markets and profiles the tax environments of 43 countries. This resource seeks to explain the complex issues facing the international telecommunications industry, specifically in terms of government regulation.

The Enlarged European Union: A Statistical Handbook. HA1107.5 .E54 2003 Morgan

Section 20 gives statistical communications information on the countries that comprise the European Union. Telephone lines, telex subscribers, telecommunications investments, and Internet usership are among the categories provided.

Handbook of the Media in Asia. P92 .A7 H36 2000 Morgan

Profiles the current state of mass media in all countries/economies that comprise Asia. This resource also gives an overview of the new electronic media, including telecommunications infrastructure, for each country.

The New Telecommunications Industry. HE7775 .H96 1997 Morgan

Part six seeks to put the international telecommunications industry into perspective by comparing statistical information among major countries including market sizes, privatization, and industry structure.

Telecommunications in Europe. HE8084 .N63 1992 Morgan

Examines the telecommunications monopolies which were prevalent in Europe during the eighties through early nineties. Also gives a solid history of the communications industry for every country in Europe.

Telecommunications in the Pacific Basin. HE8620.7 .T45 1994 Morgan

Analyzes the telecommunications systems of the Pacific region including the industry’s historical evolution and current commercial aims as of 1994.

World Media Handbook. P87 .W67 1995 Morgan

The World Media Handbook is a reference tool which provides media related statistical information for countries that are members of the United Nations. Categories include print and electronic media, telecommunications capabilities, daily newspaper listings, periodical listings, broadcast listings, and communications studies among others.

World Statistics Pocketbook. HA154 .W67 Morgan

Works as a quick reference for general economic, social, and environmental statistics. Also included in this resource is information on newspaper circulation, television receivers, telephone lines and Internet users for specified countries.

The Worldwide History of Telecommunications. TK5102.2 .H88 Morgan

Examines the technological evolution of the telecommunications industry from before 1800 to 2000. Also gives an analysis of telecommunications deregulation and liberalization for selected countries.

These sites give comprehensive listings of official government sites for the countries of the world. Use as a reference guide when searching for broadcast or telecommunications regulatory agencies for a particular country.

International Statistical Agencies

The U.S. Census Bureau provides a list of international statistical agencies for selected countries of the world. Most of these sites address their nation’s communications capabilities through statistical information

I.T.U.

The International Telecommunications Union, the U.N.’s primary resource on the development of the international telecommunications industry, provides nonmember users with some statistical information. Categories are grouped by gender, region, operator/company and country.

Browse international library Web sites through a list of external links which are organized by country. Use as an indicator for a country’s potential telecommunications capability.

United Nations Cyberschoolbus

The cyberschoolbus supplies users with international telecommunications information in a variety of topics. Countries can be grouped by socioeconomic conditions, intergovernmental organizations, and geographical locations.

United Nations Statistics Division

This page allows you to select a specific country and provides information on telephone line capabilities, cellular phone usage, personal computer ownership and internet usage on that selected country.
