Electronic Sources

SciFinder Scholar. (1907-present) SciFinder Scholar is an online database that provides electronic access to Chemical Abstracts 1907-present and is the premier database for chemists. In addition to chemists, SciFinder will be useful to researchers in most scientific disciplines, including agriculture, biology, engineering, food science, geological sciences, and medical sciences. Web of Science (Science Citation Index 1900-present) Available from the library home page. Indexes over 5,000 journals, as well as some books and patents from 1900 to the present. You can search by title key word or author, and it is mainly used to find citation information, such as who cited papers, which authors have been cited, etc.

Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology

Comprehensive encyclopedia covering all aspects of chemical technology. Includes articles on chemical substances, industrial processes, uses of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, dyes, fibers, food, cosmetics, thermodynamics, absorption, mass transfer, electrochemical processing; general subjects such as computers, patent, transportation, and much more.

Directory of Graduate Research.
Covers almost all of the colleges and universities in the United States and Canada that offer master's or doctoral degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, medicinal/pharmaceutical chemistry, clinical chemistry, polymer science, food science, forensic science, marine science, and toxicology. Listed under each institution are the faculty and their primary fields of research.

The indexes for 317 CRC handbooks are merged in these volumes, and the index includes terms, topics, chemical names, and names of organisms. Each entry has the numbers of the corresponding CRC handbooks that deal with that topic. In the front of each volume is a list of the handbooks by number, and the call number of the volume if the CSU Libraries own it. Check SAGE to make sure. This index doesn't cover any CRC handbooks published after 1990.

Chemical Safety Data Sheets. 5 vols.

The five volumes cover: main group metals and their compounds, corrosives and irritants, toxic chemicals, and flammable chemicals. For each chemical, the following information is given: identifiers, packaging and transportation information, chemical, biological, and reproductive hazards, carcinogenicity, first aid, handling and storage, and more. Each entry also includes further reading suggestions and references.

Polymer Handbook.

It includes chapters on pollution prevention and waste minimization, fertilizers, synthetic resins and plastics, natural gas, the nuclear industry, and other topics dealing with the industry.

Chemical Products Desk Reference. Compiled by Michael Ash and Irene Ash.
TP 9 .A724 1990 REF
This dictionary contains much of the same information as Gardner's Chemical Synonyms and Trade Names, edited by Michael and Irene Ash. Unlike Gardner's, this book has as an appendix a list of trade names by functional taxonomy, such as absorbents, accelerators, activators, etc. There is also an appendix of chemical component to trade name cross references, but no CAS registry number index.

Dictionary of Chemical Names and Synonyms. Philip H. Howard and Michael Neal.

Includes about 20,000 chemicals listed by CAS registry number. For each chemical, the formula, molecular weight, preferred name (if available), and a list of chemical synonyms is given. The second section of the book indexes all the synonyms (over 130,000) and indicates the CAS registry number. The third section indexes the chemical formulas with the CAS registry numbers.

Dictionary of Inorganic Compounds. 5 vols.

Includes over 40,000 trade names and chemicals and gives the company that supplies or produces it if available. Also includes the company addresses and telephone numbers.

Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary. 13th ed., 1997.
QD 5 .C5 1997 REF
Although this dictionary contains fewer entries than some of the others, the entries are sometimes longer and more in-depth. It contains descriptions of chemicals, raw materials, processes and equipment, terminology, and some trademarked products used in the chemical industry. There are also entries on Nobel Prize-winning chemists.

Encyclopedia of Inorganic Chemistry. 8 vols.

This encyclopedia covers molecular, coordination, organometallic, and nonmolecular compounds, as well as metallobiomolecules, semiconductors, ceramics and minerals. There are 260 primary articles plus over 860 short entries. The articles cover main group elements, transition metals, organometallics, bioinorganic chemistry, solid state chemistry, and physical and theoretical methods.

Encyclopedia of Polymer Science & Engineering.    19 vols.
TP 1087 .E46 1985 REF
A comprehensive encyclopedia covering all aspects of polymer science and engineering. The entries are considerably technical, and often lengthy. Each entry includes a bibliography, some quite long. The entries are authoritative, and many include illustrations, charts and tables.

Encyclopedia of Spectroscopy.

This encyclopedia includes 1000 key words and definitions that range from a few lines to a page. The book provides an overview of spectroscopy; molecular spectroscopy is given special attention, but all aspects are included. There are some physical and physical-chemical terms included if they are important to the field of spectroscopy.

McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Chemistry. 1993.
QD 5 .M36 1993 REF
Covers briefly aspects of chemistry including inorganic, organic, physical, and analytical. Some general background articles about physics are included if they are important in the chemistry field. There are almost 800 articles, most of which are selected from McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. The articles are often illustrated, including diagrams and structural formulas. The index is comprehensive.

McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. 7th ed., 1992. 20 vols. + 3 supplements

This twenty volume encyclopedia contains 7500 entries covering the physical and natural sciences, engineering, and technology. The entries average two pages, and there are 13,000 illustrations, including maps, charts, graphs, and photographs.

Sources of Chemicals

Aldrich Catalog Handbook of Fine Chemicals.
TP 202 .A43 1994-1995 REF
A catalog of fine chemicals, listed alphabetically, with the price, unit, physical and chemical properties, CAS registry number, alternate names, etc. Some structures are also included. There is a molecular formula index, and a CAS number index. The catalog also contains some equipment.

Chem Sources U.S.A.

The first section of this book (the white pages) lists around 130,000 chemicals alphabetically by chemical nomenclature. An abbreviation of the company that produces the chemical is given, and usually, the CAS registry number. The yellow pages include 6,300 trade name products, and the blue pages list the companies by the abbreviations, and give the full name, address, and phone number. There is also a list of companies by their full names.

Biochemicals and Organic Compounds for Research, and Diagnostic Reagents. (Sigma Chemical Company)

This catalog has sections on compounds, bioactive peptides, immunochemicals, molecular biology products, tissues culture and media reagents, chromatography, techware, and diagnostic kits and reagents. For the chemicals, information such as physical properties, and price and unit are given.

Chemical Sciences Graduate School Finder Most recent edition in Reference

Covers much of what the Directory of Graduate Research has. This book is published by the American Chemical Society, and has over 220 entries for departments from over 185 institutions in the United States and Canada. Included are schools which offer master's or doctoral degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, and related disciplines. For each school, it gives department information, admissions information, degree requirements, financial information, research facilities, and faculty and research areas.
