Archives of American Art part of the Smithsonian Institution, carries 13 million documents about American visual arts from the 18th century to the present; includes a reference section to query staff; provides a good starting point for research in American art.
Art Guide: the Art Lover's Guide to Britain and Ireland contains information on nearly 2,000 named artists, 650 museums, and 4,500 exhibition listings. Artist listings include exhibit locales with links to museum listings and web sites. Museum sites also include maps to find locations.
Art History Resources on the Web hosted by Sweet Briar College with information and links organized by art period, style, artist, architect, and historical monument.
Art in Context a comprehensive, continually updated and publicly funded clearinghouse of information on contemporary artists, their work and their dealers.

Art on the Web a very comprehensive source for accessing thousands of internet resources relating to art and architecture. Provides over 1,200 links to various sites.
