Carnivore Damage

Carnivores involved in wildlife-human conflicts range from the well-known predators such as coyotes and wolves to the smaller, urban animals such as skunks and raccoons.

Nonlethal predator control techniques

Coyotes, foxes, bobcats, mountain lions, wild dogs, wolves and, to a lesser extent, bears are predators on poultry, sheep, goats, house cats, small dogs, exotic birds and game animals. The most common carnivorous predator in the United States is the coyote. Control of depredating coyotes remains one of the most contentious issues in wildlife damage management today.

Foxes can cause significant losses for poultry producers. High mortality in pheasants, waterfowl and other game birds, especially upland game birds, can also be traced to red fox depredation.

Bears

Bears are primarily scavengers. They will molest beehives and forage in some field crops such as corn and oats. Bears are also known to damage trees by feeding on the inner bark, and breaking limbs of orchard trees trying to reach fruit. Bears have been known to kill livestock.

Minks, weasels and other members of the family, Mustelidae, are primarily problematic at poultry facilities. Badgers will occasionally prey on poultry also, however, their open burrows are more of a hazard, and burrowing undermines dams, dikes, irrigation canals, and road surfaces.

Raccoon and skunk damage is most visible in towns, cities and suburban areas, though raccoons and skunks may kill poultry or damage garden or truck crops, especially sweet corn. Both species are a nuisance around outbuildings and houses when they try to get in, looking for food. Both will scavenge in garbage. Raccoons will nest in chimneys while skunks will burrow under porches or buildings. Raccoons and skunks dig holes in lawns, golf courses and gardens
