Historic Downtown Littleton

Originally incorporated in 1890 with a population of 245, the City of Littleton, 11 miles south of downtown Denver, still maintains its historic downtown business district. Boasting turn-of-the-century storefronts, Historic Downtown Littleton houses more than 100 businesses in a ten-block area anchored by Main Street. In recent years, the district has enjoyed a revival of interest and an infusion of public and private dollars to become a first-class shopping, dining, and arts experience.

Getting there:
From downtown Denver, take the light rail south to the Littleton Station. The D&RG Railroad Depot is architecturally significant, in that it is one of only a few remaining examples of the 19th century style of small, stone depots. Note the mural of the City of Littleton on the side of the depot as you exit the train. After you proceed up the stairs, you can get a latte or fresh pastry at Romancing the Bean, a locally owned coffee shop, before heading to downtown Littleton. Go north across Alamo Street, cross through Bega Park, and turn left on Main Street.

Shops of Interest:
If you stroll up and down Main Street and the adjacent side streets, you’ll find dozens of small restaurants, art galleries, and unique shops. There are no chain stores here, just independent merchants with a passion for what they do! Here are some establishments you won’t want to miss:

If handmade pizza and beer is your cup of tea, McKinners Pizza Bar may be just the place for you. Abe’s Cafe, featuring excellent Greek food and deli sandwiches, has been a downtown favorite for decades. You can’t beat the baklava, which is made daily by the owner’s mother. Cafe Terracotta, a newcomer to the block, offers excellent meals in a restored brick Victorian house. Located across the street from Serenditipi-Tea.

Two other restaurants of note are Toast, 2700 West Bowles Avenue, a casual dining establishment that features upscale breakfast and lunch fare; and Sushi Basho, with contemporary Japanese cuisine. Both are located at the west end of Main Street, just east of Santa Fe Drive.

Larimer Square

Larimer Square is located in historic downtown Denver on Larimer Street, between 14th and 15th Streets. Originally Denver's very first city block, Larimer Square is now one of the city's trendiest shopping and dining areas. It is approximately four blocks North (left) as one exits the east side of the convention center (away from the mountains). By the way, if you keep walking past Larimer Street, you will come upon Lower Downtown (or LoDo).

Olde Towne Arvada

Located about ten miles from downtown Denver, Historic Olde Town Arvada, like many other communities in the Denver Metro area, got its start during the gold rush era. It was the location where the first gold strike was recorded in Colorado history. The Town of Arvada was founded in 1870 and officially incorporated in 1904. At that time, Grandview Avenue (known then as Railroad Street), became a thriving business area. There was a livery stable, a feed store, a blacksmith, a threshing operation, a tannery, a shoemaker, a dry goods store, a cigar store, a grocery store, and a lumber yard. Today, many of the old buildings have been restored, and the area retains its historic hometown charm.

Getting There
From downtown Denver, pick up the #52 bus on 15th Street and take it all the way to the City of Arvada. You can get off on Olde Wadsworth Boulevard in the middle of the historic downtown district. If you’re driving, take I-25 to I-70 (West) to the Wadsworth exit. Go north (right) on Wadsworth and turn left at 53rd Avenue. Turn right at Olde Wadsworth Boulevard and follow it past the railroad tracks.
