I. Arts Education
- AIGA Professional Resources An informative site with sub-sections on teaching and studying graphic design. [See their Reference Library which includes multiple source, such as their compendium of AIGA Medalists along with brief biographical sketches on each medalist].
- ArtsConnectEd "For Your Classroom" A database and resource gateway created by and related to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Walker Art Center; the site is designed to aid in teaching art to school age children. The educational databases are searchable by keyword and browsable by grade level.
- ArtsEdge Sponsored by the Kennedy Center and the National Endowment for the Arts, the site provides a wealth of information divided into three broad categories: news, teaching materials and professional resources. The goal of the site is both to engender greater use of technology in the teaching of art and foster Internet use in developing arts-centered curricula.
- CAA Guidelines for Faculty Teaching in Computer-Based Media in Fine Art and Design An outline of suggestions for instructors of computer based media programs sponsored by the College Art Association.
- Design, Type and Graphics An online magazine with tips, tricks, publishing information, and resources for graphic artists.
- Design: Talkboard A variety of potentially helpful links to publications and other sites; see the Resources section for an extensive bibliography of online articles.
- Rene Wanner's Poster Page A large compendium of links related to poster artists, current exhibits and books on poster art and artists; useful for background and current information on poster art and design.
II. Exhibits
- Monuments of Future: Designs by El Lissitzky Explores life, work and philosophies of Russian artist El Lissitzky. Thumbnail and large scale images of over 100 Lissitzky works are available on the site, which is sponsored by the Getty Research Institute.
- Posters American Style Designed to accompany the Smithsonian American Art Museum traveling exhibit of the same name, the Posters American Style site investigates the history of the American poster, examines particular posters of historic interest, and gives background on the printing process of American posters.
- Posters at the Turn of the Century Created by Marshall Jung, the site provides a brief history of the early twentieth century posters with links to various poster images.
- Posters of Toulouse-Lautrec An exhibition from the San Diego Museum of Art concentrating on the poster art of Toulouse-Lautrec. The site provides background on the artist and 32 reproductions of posters produced between 1891 and 1899.
- Powers of Persuasion - Poster Art From World War II A collection of posters produced during the World War II era to promote patriotism and the war effort; the online version is based on the original exhibit held at the National Archives in Washington, DC, from May 1994 to February 1995.
- Transnational Poster Art An online collection of 30 posters commissioned by the German Democratic Republic to promote their political views regarding Latin America during the 1970's and 1980's. The Web site was created by two students on behalf of Stanford University Libraries Germanic Collections.
- Women Veterans Historical Project: Women at War An extensive online collection of posters and other objects from the collection of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Libraries; the exhibit centers around women's involvement in military service during World War I and World War II.
III. Image Databases
- African Posters Mounted by Northwestern University Libraries, the collection includes more than 300 posters published in or about Africa available via a searchable database.
- AIDS Posters Mounted by the UCLA Digital Library, the collection includes more than 600 international posters on the topic of AIDS available via a searchable database.
- D2 Digital Diamond The Temple University Libraries' database of digital image collections, which allows keyword searching within single collections (such as the Tyler War Poster Collection) or across multiple collections.
- Documenting the American South: North Carolinians and the Great War: The Impact of World War I on the Tar Heel State An extensive site tracing the history of World War I in the State of North Carolina. The section on Propaganda Posters lists works thematically and provides links to various poster images. See: Documenting the American South, the home page of the site, for an overview of the project with access to each collection.
- Swiss Poster Collection Carnegie Mellon's unique collection of over 300 posters; the online collection is searchable and browsable by category. Additional sections provide detailed overviews of the collection, the history of graphic design in Switzerland, and resources for further reading.
- Visual Resources Database A searchable visual arts database of historical collections that represent Minnesota and its people, sponsored by the Minnesota Historical Society. A search can be limited to posters.
- World War II Poster Collection A comprehensive collection of over 300 posters issued by US Federal agencies from the onset of World War II through 1945; sponsored by Northwestern University Libraries.
