Digitization Information

Digitization of the posters has evolved over ten years.

1991-1995
Digitization was begun in 1993 with a vendor scanning slides of the posters. The scans were recorded onto compact discs in the Kodak PhotoCD format. All of the posters from the 1991, 1993 and 1995 exhibitions were digitized in this manner
1997-1999
Poster images from the 1997 and 1999 exhibitions were again scans of slides and were recorded onto CDs by a vendor in the TIFF file format.
2001-2005
As previous methods had not produced the best results and technology had improved, direct digitization was undertaken through a different vendor for the 2001 posters and continued for the 2003 and 2005 posters. The Photographic Services Department of the Office of Instructional Services on Colorado State University’s campus photographed the posters using a high quality digital camera. From that, high-resolution TIFF files were created. Equipment for the process is detailed below.

  • Plano-polished color separation behind-the-lens filters, provide high-quality image resolution and color accuracy.

  • Micro Nikkor 55 mm 1:2.8, SN# 729822 (for use with oversized posters)
Lighting
Norman P40/40
  • A heavy-duty 4000 w-s power supply consisting of two channels of 2000 watt-seconds, each with two lamphead outlets.
LH2400 Lamphead
  • A FQ3 2400 UV filtered quartz flash tube, 250w quartz halogen modeling lamp (Q250CL\DC) and a 20’ lamphead cable.
