BEFORE
  • Maps were stapled; staples were rusted

  • Signature pages were split and sewing was broken

  • Cardboard strip extensions were weak and worn

  • Board covers were water damaged

  • End sheets were detached and damaged

  • Spine linings were missing

  • Spine was missing

  • Brittle cloth jacket cover was hand sewn together

 

 

  • New acid-free paper extensions were made to accommodate sewing structure

  • Restapled pages were repaired with paste and Japanese tissue

  • Two sewing techniques were used to secure the maps and text signatures

    • For Maps - side stitch

    • For Text - saddle stitch

  • Covers were replaced with new boards covered in buckram book cloth

  • New end sheets were sewn in

  • New spine linings were added

  • An Oxford hollow was used to reconstruct the spine to give the text block more support

  • The title from the original front cover was glued onto the new front cover

  • A copy of the title was scanned from the original spine and placed on the new one

  • It was decided to discard the cloth jacket cover due to its brittle condition

AFTER


The conservation treatment took six hours to complete. Lauren Ottaviano, Student Technician Specialist,
 performed the procedure under the direction of Ruby Olsen, Library Technician II.
