Information Literacy Goals
for the Upper Level Undergraduate

  • Uses appropriate search keywords, using database descriptors or subject headings to revise and enhance searches

  • Narrows, broadens, or changes research question as informed by research results

  • Selects relevant specialized databases for specialized topics

  • Constructs searches appropriately using AND, OR, phrases, nesting, and truncation

  • Uses online help options

  • Differentiates between primary and secondary resources by discipline; finds primary resources when appropriate or required

  • Applies considerations of authority, purpose, relevance, and point of view in selecting and evaluating resources

  • Determines the availability of needed information and makes decisions on broadening the information seeking process beyond local resources (e.g. interlibrary loan, using resources at other locations)

  • Develops a realistic and overall plan and timeline to acquire the needed information

  • Applies research strategies and concepts to both academic and non-academic situations (e.g. projects at work, graduate school research, issues in personal life)

  • Recognizes the necessity of life-long learning
