CO150 Guide for Librarians

Thank you for the time and energy you devote to the CO150 program. If you haven't patted yourself on the back lately, allow me. Your work truly does make a difference to the students.

  1. Please let Sari Keilman (491-6952) know if you would like to be on (or off) the e-mail list of CO150 Librarians.

  2. Mark your calendar!
One of the EILs will be booked for you, and you will receive word about this via e-mail from Sari. Check Amy's door for a list of upcoming classes and let us know if you see any discrepancies. If you know you're going to have to miss a class, let Sari or Amy know ASAP.

  3. Know your CO150 Instructor.
Are they a brand new GTA or have then been around a while? Which syllabus are they using? What assignment are they working on? What are their expectations for the class? Have a generic email ready to send when you've been matched with a CO150 class. Do not be surprised on the day of class if they were expecting something different than the typical spiel. If they are asking for something you don't feel you can provide, let Amy know and she will have a chat with them. Sari will provide any contact information she has, as well as any initial remarks from the instructor. Here is the CO150 Course Curriculum for this year: http://writing.colostate.edu/comp/co150/06-07/.

  4. Get your handouts ready.
There is a handout available for modification at: T:/REFERENCE/CO150. Open it and save it with a new name for yourself. Do with it what you will, and if you have suggestions/corrections for the basic format, please pass those along. Feel free to save your version of this handout to the T: drive...as long as you don't mind us pilfering! (P.S. I've been told 3-hole punching handouts makes for better retention!)

  5. Get your examples ready.
If you're fresh out of example ideas, check out the list of things that others have done in the CO150 "Idea Exchange" folder at T:/REFERENCE/CO150. This will be a dynamic document that I hope you will add to when the muse inspires. There is also an outline you can use as a guide for your classes.

  6. Welcome your classes.
There will be some laminated CO150 door signs in the slots outside EIL1 and EIL2. If two CO150 classes are going on at the same time, please put the professor's name on the white board prior to class.

  7. Report your statistics.
After the session, go to the Instruction Statistics page to input information about the class you taught. Please insert the number of people who attended the session and make sure your name is in the Instructor slot. Please try to get this done ASAP after the class so we have good statistics to report at any given time.

  8. Please provide any and all feedback to Amy and/or Sari, good or bad.
Was the room too hot/cold? Did the instructor report any problems or concerns? Did you try something new with the class that worked/didn't work? Did something go haywire in booking the class?

And for fun...if you'd like to see some of the fruits of your labor, check out some of the writing generated by CO150 students here: http://writing.colostate.edu/gallery/talkingback/

Check out the Beloit Mindset List to get you acquainted with the majority of first year students you'll be working with: http://www.beloit.edu/~pubaff/mindset/

Questions, comments, concerns? Is there anything else that would be handy to have documented? Just let me know. Thanks!
