Searching the Library Catalog SAGE on the Web

Use the library catalog SAGE to find books, government documents, electronic resources, and periodicals (magazines, journals, and newspapers) owned by Colorado State University (CSU). Use Research Databases to identify articles in journals as well as other materials (books, proceedings, etc.) which may or may not be owned by CSU.

The URL for the library catalog SAGE is http://catalog.library.colostate.edu/

You can also reach the library catalog from any Libraries' Web page by clicking on image of Library Catalog text hyperlink from home page from the Libraries' home page (first entry under image of "Collections" header found on CSU Library's home page). Within the Collections tab, you can click on the blue-backed image of "Catalog" tab found on Collections pages tab. From other categories, click on the green-backed Collections tab near the top of the page and then image of "Library Catalog (SAGE) hyperlink found on Collections tab page or the blue-backed Catalog tab.

Tabs at the top select a specific type of search. Additional tabs (not pictured here) are: Numbers, My Record, New Books, Prospector, and Help. Combine searches in the keyword search. For example, change "Any Field" to Author, Title, Subject, or Note:image of author Shakespeare and title Hamlet search

Keyword search will identify materials by searching key words found throughout each record, including title, subject, author, and contents.

Title search identifies materials by title when you know the exact word order. When only a latter part of a title is known, use the Keyword search.

Author search will identify materials written by individuals and organizations. Type individual author names last name first.

i.e.: Morrison, Toni International Monetary Fund

Journal Title locates periodicals owned by Colorado State University. This does not include titles of annuals, series, annals, etc. Do a Title search for those. See How to Determine if the Library owns a Journal for details.

Subject (Library of Congress Subjects) search will identify materials by assigned subject heading. This method is powerful, but you must use “preferred” terms. These can be found in the Library of Congress Subject Headings book (or hotlinked under “Subject” within records).

Numbers can be used to search for items by ISBN, ISSN, or by call number. (Library of Congress, Dewey, SuDoc)

My Record can be used to verify which items are checked out to you. You may also renew items here, unless they have been recalled by another user. Click on the image of LOGOUT button (has red X on it) button with the red X to return to main SAGE menu.

image of Request/Hold button USE Request/Hold BUTTON TO:
  1. recall books from other users (when the book is checked out--this is indicated by "DUE MM-DD-YY");
  2. request items from STORAGE; or
  3. make a "Shop On SAGE" request (books are collected from the shelves and held for pickup at the location you request (Morgan Loan/Reserve Desk, Atmospheric Branch Library, or Veterinary Branch Library).

LIMITING SEARCHES
After doing a TITLE, AUTHOR, JOURNAL TITLE, or SUBJECT search, you may narrow your result (thereby making it more specific) by choosing the image of Limit/Sort Search button option. The screen displayed shows the default search screen. Make any modifications you have here:

After making your selection(s), click the hyperlinked "Submit."

COMBINING TERMS (KEYWORD SEARCHES)
In Keyword searches, words automatically have AND inserted between each word entered. To search a phrase, put words inside quotes. Do not use parentheses for phrase searching. Other results may be obtained using AND, OR, AND NOT, NEAR, WITHIN # (described below).
  • AND narrows searches
    • This is the default search, ("Soil pollution" searches for"soil and pollution" and finds 654 entries 11/10/06), but it is useful to know about typing in AND for more complex searches. For example: "travel and (art or recreation)"
  • OR broadens searches
    • for example: "soil or pollution" (29,244 entries 11/10/06)
  • AND NOT eliminates items, so use it with caution
    • note: be careful to use "and not" and not "not" alone in SAGE. The catalog returns a "NO ENTRIES FOUND" when "not" is used--even when an "and not" returns results using the same terms.
  • Additional ways to modify your Keyword searches:
  •   Type in Words to search: EXAMPLES
TRUNCATION Words may be internally or right-hand truncated using an asterisk *. Use double asterisks ** for more than 6 characters.

    wom*n and librar*

    math**

OPERATORS Use and or or to specify multiple words in any field, any order. Use and not to exclude words. Use parentheses to group words when using multiple operators.

    cat or feline

(Alaska or Canada) and (recreation and not hiking)

PROXIMITY Use near to specify words close to each other, in any order. Use within # to specify words within a set range of each other. Symbol # may stand for any number.

    California near university

    Colorado within 12 Wyoming

FIELDS Specify fields to search, using field abbreviation. Fields available for this database are a: (author), t: (title), s: (subject), and n: (additional keywords.) Subjects are NOT cross-referenced.

    a:Twain and t:huck

    (a:Frost or a:Whitman) and s:poet*

    t:medicine and (n:research or s:information)

FULL RECORD OPTIONS
To view a full record (complete information about an item), click on the highlighted title. From the full record, you can select: Prev Next image of Start Over buttonimage of Request/Hold buttonimage of Save Records buttonimage of MARC Display buttonimage of Return to List buttonimage of Limit/Sort buttonimage of Another Search button, and any highlighted terms on the record itself. Highlighted sections on a full record are the author's name, subjects (Library of Congress Subject Headings), and the call number. Thus, you can do searches for items by the same author, the same topic, or browse shelves electronically, without having to image of Start Over button, use the drop menu, or type in the terms. To do a new subject search from a full record, click on a highlighted subject; the selected subject will be found in the middle of the next page as part of an alphabetical list of subjects. Your options from this page are: Prev Next   image of Start Over button image of Extended Display button image of Search as Words button image of Another Search button

or selecting a highlighted subject. image of Extended Display button shows the titles of items with their date and location, under each subject heading. If there are more than just a few, choose "additional entries" to list the entire set, 11 items per page. image of Return to List button   from a full record takes you to the brief title list with date and location. More items under a particular term can be found under "additional entries." When you select image of Search as Words button  from this page, the database searches the subject term as a keyword search.

TRUNCATION
In a Subject search, when seeking an exact subject (skipping the alphabetical list of nearby subjects), type a "|" (pipe) right after your term (a term can be a string of words) and only retrieve records that have that exact term. "Related subjects" will also display when applicable. For example:

public buildings| Finds only the entries for "public buildings" (related subjects are also identified). Without the "|," the database searches for all 200+ subject terms that begin with "public buildings."

SEARCHING REGIONAL CATALOG (PROSPECTOR) LIBRARIES
SAGE allows you to repeat your search in partner libraries' catalogs with Prospector. Most of the libraries in Prospector are in Colorado. (Once in Prospector you can make additional, different searches.) To repeat your search in Prospector, click on the image of Regional Catalog (Prospector) button button.

If you wish to search the Regional Catalog (Prospector) to begin with, select the
tab on the main SAGE search page.

Note: if you wish to request an item from Prospector, you first must establish a PIN number in your home library. Colorado State University library card holders (faculty/staff/students)--your University ID number is your library card number.image of mock CSU ID card showing ID number surrounded in red

Go to the Library Catalog SAGE home page and select "Your Record." Then choose "View Your Checkout Record & Renew Items." Fill in your name, CSU ID and create your PIN (you get to remember it). A combination of letters and numbers is recommended; use at least 4 letters/numbers, but a combination of 8 or more is recommended.

Suggestion: once your record is on the screen, verify that the library has your current address and phone number.

Once you have established a PIN number, you may "Request this item" from Prospector libraries.

LOCATE IN RESULTS
Change number in the box before selecting the "Locate in Results" button, unless you want to jump to the last item on the list.
