Indexes

Use these indexes to find articles on current, policy, general, and popular topics. Some of these identify scholarly sources. Once found, evaluate each article. Always identify and locate (and at least skim) more articles than are required for an assignment. To find the best sources possible, make comparisons among several articles.

  • Academic Search Premier. Dates of coverage vary by title. Updated 6 times a year.
    • Covers multidisciplinary topics. Includes scholarly journals and full text of some articles; articles in PDF have images. Nearly 4,650 serials, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed publications. Limit by published date to identify recent articles on topics. Subject terms not as refined as in other databases, so it will be necessary to do multiple searches on topics. Can do image search.
  • Article First. 1990- . Updated daily.
    • Covers business, science, humanities, social science, medicine, technology, and popular culture.

  • LexisNexis Academic (Was Academic Universe). Dates of coverage vary; source list has coverage dates for individual periodicals.
    • For current topics (last 14 days/two weeks) look under "Top News" for articles. The pull down menu offers: Today's News; Last two weeks news; Page 1 News; Arts and Entertainment Stories; Business and Consumer Stories; Editorial Materials, Education Stories; Environmental Stories, Combined; Health, Food and Fitness Stories; Lifestyle News Sections, Combined; Politics and Government Materials; Science and Technology Stories; Sports and Recreation Stories; Travel Stories; World Affairs Stories. "General News Topics" (archive goes back approximately 20 years), "Government & Political News," "News Transcripts," and "Law Reviews" are also useful categories for current topics. Descriptions of the categories are available on the main menu. Scroll down the search page after selecting a category for search tips (Boolean terms, connectors [w/n] etc.).

  • Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature. 1900- . AI 3 .R48 Reference South
    • General interest periodicals. Be certain to check in the front of this index for the full title of abbreviated journal titles in years before 1988. (Readers' Guide began including complete journal titles in its citations in 1988.)

  • Social Sciences Abstracts. 1988- (abstracts begin Jan. 1994). Updated monthly.
    • Covers journals in sociology, anthropology, geography, economics, political science and law.

  • Social Sciences Index. 1907- . (Title varies.) AI 3. I496 Reference South
    • Covers journals in anthropology, criminal justice, economics, family studies, geology, international relations, law, minority studies, political science, psychology, social work, sociology, women's studies, and other related areas. Be certain to check in the front of the index to find out the full title of the abbreviated journal titles found in this index.
