Frequently Asked Questions

(Updated September, 2004)

Q. Are the library resources available to persons not associated with CSU?

A. Thank you for your interest in our Library's resources. Colorado residents who are not affiliated with the University are invited to fill out an application for our community borrower's card and when approved, they can check out library books that normally circulate to the University's students, staff and faculty. The circulation period is twenty-eight days. In order to obtain this card, individuals must have a valid Colorado identification card, such as a Colorado Driver's License, with a correct and current address; minors under eighteen may also apply with accompanying parent/guardian signature. Please apply at the Loan/Reserve Desk next to the main library entrance. Community borrowers are welcome to use non-circulating materials, including out online electronic resources, here in the building. We encourage community use and are very happy to help you find the information you want. Please ask for assistance at the Information Desk.

Q. Please prohibit cell phones in the library.

A. The Library is trying to limit cell phone usage in quiet areas throughout Morgan Library. The lower level, for example, has signs at all entrances that clearly state "No Cell Phones." Similar signs are found in all other designated quiet areas on the second and third floors. Unfortunately, we do not have the staff necessary to monitor cell phone use in this large facility; instead we rely on user self-regulation and compliance.

Q. The quiet areas are continually plagued with people who want to talk with their friends or call people on their cell phone. I would be very grateful if periodically someone could patrol these areas and make sure everyone in quiet areas is being respectful of others.

A. We sympathize with your concerns about noise in the Library's Quiet Areas. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to patrol the building for noise offenders. We think that the quietest areas in the library may be the east side of the second and third floors; you might want to try studying there. We have also designated the entire lower level as a quiet area and installed new signage at each entrance to this floor indicating this fact. Also, we are constructing a very quiet area on our second floor; after we get the construction estimate the University requires, work will begin. We will let everyone know when it is ready.

Q. Is smoking allowed near the main entrance to the Library?

A. Thank you for your concern about smoking at the entrance to the building. Colorado State University guidelines fall under the State of Colorado. You may know there is a local ordinance banning smoking within a certain perimeter around entrances. However, because CSU is a state facility, the local ordinance does not apply. We have, however, tried to encourage smokers to move farther away from the building by putting receptacles farther from the door. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent smokers from standing near the entrance. Smoking is banned in state-owned buildings, so if you see this, please let someone at the Loan/Reserve Desk know, so we can inform the campus police.

Q. The building is too cold/hot.

A. Building temperature is something we continue to ask Facilities to monitor and adjust; it is difficult to maintain a temperature in a public building that is comfortable for everyone. Some areas of the building are cooler that other areas so you may wish to try different sections to match your preference.
