Fang Chen is a Chinese designer, and the honor laureate for the 15th CIIPE exhibition. Chen, currently an associate professor in the Department of Integrative Arts at Pennsylvania State University, was born in China and received degrees from the Hubei Academy of Fine Arts and Hubei Institute of Technology in Wuhan, China. Chen has been the recipient of numerous awards and has served as a juror at design competitions throughout the world. Chen’s work is included in several permanent collections including the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, the Museum of Modern Art in Toyama and the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Mon. A prolific writer as well as designer, Chen is author of several critical essays for design publications and exhibitions in China. Chen’s award-winning series, “We Are One,” is an innovative take on the poster that includes an extended series of linked images addressing nationalism, racism and environmental sustainability. Chen is not a commercial designer – he sees himself as a philosopher and a teacher. He engages in graphic design and uses the poster medium as a “philosophical pursuit,” a way to share his ideas with the world and to teach his students.

CIIPE is a biennial event hosted on the Colorado State University that highlights excellence in poster design from around the world. The program strives to exhibit and interpret poster design in order to bring outstanding examples of visual communication to an American audience and to promote international understanding and tolerance through the graphic arts and artistic dialogue. Despite digital innovations in disseminating information, posters, first utilized in the 19th century remain a vital and viable communication tool, responsive to our changing world in the 21st century. Posters in the show have historically mirrored the issues of foremost public concern. Past exhibits have addressed a wide variety of public issues including global peace, environmentalism, human rights, public health, and social justice. The 14th Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition will be held this year on the Colorado State University campus. Posters from the artists invited to the international poster show will fill the Clara Hatton and Curfman Galleries on Colorado State's campus from Sept. 9 through Oct. 14. The only exhibition of its kind in the United States, this year´s show will highlight work by 86 artists from 34 countries. This exhibition is supported by the Colorado Council on the Arts, the Fort Collin´s Fort Fund and Citizen Printing.
