Political Science: Collection Development Policy

Purpose

To collect, manage and provide access to library materials to support the academic and research programs of the Political Science Department. The department offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees through the Ph.D. Curricular emphasis is on local, state and national government, comparative political systems, international relations and organization, public administration, environment and politics of natural resources, normative political theory, public law and research methodology. Course offerings in such topics as Politics and Society along the Mexican Border, Comparative African Politics and Theories of Political Action support diversity programs in especially Hispanic and African studies. There is also an emphasis on comparative environmental politics and Western as well as Eastern European politics.

Scope of Coverage

Language: Primarily English. Some materials in Spanish, French, and Serbo-Croatian.

Geographic: Primarily U.S., Latin America and Europe as well as emerging third world areas, particularly in Africa and Asia.

Chronological: Emphasis on current systems. Some historical treatment as necessary, especially in international relations, the development of public policy, and political theory.

Publication types and levels: Current publications from primarily university and scholarly presses. Trade publications selectively.

Types of Materials

Monographs and serials in traditional or electronic format. U.S. Government documents received via the depository library program, especially those issued by the U.S. Congress, Office of the President, and the State Department.
