Human Dimensions of Natural Resources: Collection Development Policy

Purpose

The collection supports instruction and research through the Ph. D. level for degrees offered through the Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources including:

  • Bachelor of Science degrees in Natural Resource Recreation and Tourism with a concentration in one of three areas: Parks and Protected Area Management; Natural Resource Tourism; or Interpretation.
  • Master of Science and Ph. D. degrees in Natural Resource Recreation and Tourism with a focus on the human dimensions of natural resources.
  • The collection overlaps with other subject areas including ecosystem management, land use planning, watershed management, forestry, wildlife management and geographic information systems.

Scope of Coverage

Language:Primarily English language publications with selected English translations of works in other languages.

Chronological limits:Twentieth century.

Geographic areas: Primarily United States.

Date of Publication: Emphasis is on collection of materials published within the last five years with only a limited selection of retrospective material.

Types of publishers: Academic and trade publishers.

Types of Materials

The collection emphasizes serials and monographs in public park administration and management; outdoor life and recreation; conservation of natural resources; human dimensions of natural resources; environmental education and interpretation; ecotourism; sustainable tourism; travel; tourism generally; and leisure. Natural resource recreation and tourism resources are concentrated in serial and periodical titles, government publications, conference proceedings, research level monographs, and advanced level textbooks. Only a few introductory textbooks are purchased. Some outdoor recreation materials of a general nature may be purchased to support the outdoor interests of undergraduates.

Conference proceedings are acquired on a selective basis.

Bibliographies are acquired on a selective basis.

Technical reports are not routinely collected.

Government documents are received through the Federal Library Depository Program.

Theses and dissertations from other institutions are acquired on a very selective basis as dictated by graduate student and faculty needs.

Microforms are not purchased except in extraordinary circumstances.

Electronic resources are a priority--particularly journal article online full-text access via vendors or databases.

Videos and other non-print media are not purchased except in extraordinary circumstances.
