Undergraduate majors in music lead to both the B.M. and B.A. degrees. The B.M. degree offers concentrations in composition, music education, music therapy, and performance. The B.A. degree allows students to study music within a larger context of a liberal education, with less emphasis placed on studies specific to music. A minor in music is also offered. Graduate programs leading to the master of music (M.M.) degree in music education, music education with Kodaly emphasis, music therapy, performance, and conducting are all offered.
A major in performing arts offers separate concentrations for dance and theater. A minor in theater is also offered.
Scope of Coverage
Language: English with some exceptions, particularly for music study scores.
Geographic: Emphasis is upon Europe and the Americas.
Chronological: Emphasis is upon the Middle Ages to contemporary manifestations.
Publication Types and Levels:
Music: in general, monograph purchases follow the language, geographic, and chronological scopes outlined above. Acquisition of music scores emphasizes study scores rather than "scores and parts." Purchase of different editions is acceptable. Opera and jazz are among subject areas acquired in addition to classical music and composers. Monographs and periodicals pertinent to music therapy are also acquired.
Theatre: ordinarily the selector for English acquires plays, but the selector for Music, Theatre, and Dance is responsible for acquisition of musical comedies and Broadway plays. Other foci include acting techniques; monologues for both men and women; creation of theater sets; history of theater; theater makeup; and costume. Other coverage scopes adhere to those outlined above.
Dance: acquisition emphasizes books on dance technique, particularly ballet, with little emphasis in regard to history of dance. Other coverage scopes adhere to those outlined above.
Types of Materials
Periodicals, monographs, and study scores almost exclusively.
