Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology: Collection Development Policy

Purpose

This collection supports the curriculum and research in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology. Degrees include: B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Microbiology, as well as a Ph.D. in Pathology. Research emphasis in the department includes parasitology, vector biology, virology/arbovirology, and mycobacterial research. This department supports two interdisciplinary academic programs: Interdisciplinary Program in Food Science/Safety, and Biotechnology Interdisciplinary Studies Program. The Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology is also integral to the Infectious Diseases Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence.

This collection supports other disciplines on campus including: Animal Sciences, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.

Scope of Coverage

Language: Strong emphasis on English language publications.

Chronological limits: Current research is the focus of this collection.

Geographic areas: International with an emphasis on the United States.

Publication types: Recent publications from university presses, scientific publishers and societies. Textbooks are collected on a highly selective basis.

Types of Materials

Strong emphasis on monographs and serials.

Conferences, symposia, and proceedings are collected selectively.

Serials are acquired electronically where it is feasible to do so.

Microforms, videos and sound recordings are not collected.
