Foreign Languages and Literatures: Collection Development Policy

Purpose

To collect, manage and provide access to library materials to support the academic and research interests of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures

Majors and minors are offered in French, German, and Spanish; minors in Japanese and Russian. Graduate programs, leading to the M.A., are offered in French, German, and Spanish. There is also a joint degree in foreign languages and the teaching of English as a second language. Intercultural understanding and international perspectives are advanced by courses that provide insight into foreign cultures through learned proficiency in their language, familiarity with its literature, and incorporation of cultural and area studies (particularly Latin American and Asian). Vocational emphases include education (ESL and bi-lingual), business and technical writing and speaking, translation studies and Linguistics. "The programs in foreign languages emphasize oral and written proficiency and aim to develop knowledge of the culture and the literature, and to promote the critical and analytical skills requisite to an understanding of their relationships." http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/FLL/

Scope of Coverage

Language: Materials will be collected to support the majors and minors in French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Russian. Resources for basic first and second year classes currently being offered on campus will be acquired to a lesser extent. When possible, both English translations as well as the original language will be collected for standard works and classics. Priority will be given to literary criticism published in English. Materials dealing with language learning will typically be collected in English. However, for major works originally written in a non-Roman alphabet, English translations will be given priority; originals will be acquired selectively based on the following criteria: scope of the item and its value to the collection as a whole, authority of the author or publisher, quality of the format, date of the material, availability of the material elsewhere, and anticipated demand for the item.

Geographic: Priority will be given, for each language, to materials originating from nations where that language is spoken. Titles about a given country/culture are also collected.

Chronological: Emphasis placed on purchasing materials published within the last five years, except in areas covering the history of the subject. French, German and Spanish coverage is primarily from the Middle Ages to the present, with emphasis on later periods.

Publication types and levels: Periodicals, monographs, full text and citation databases will be acquired as appropriate from university and scholarly presses, trade publications, and international publishers. Textbooks and audio/visual materials are not ordinarily acquired. [Note: The Foreign Language Multimedia Center on campus provides audio/visual and interactive learning materials for students; http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/FLL/lab/
