Journalism and Technical Communication: Collection Development Policy

Purpose

To collect, manage and provide access to library materials to support the academic and research programs of the department of Journalism & Technical Communication. The Journalism & Technical Communication department has concentrations in four areas leading to the B.A.: News-editorial; public relations; specialized communication; television news and video communication; a minor in media studies; and the M.A. degree in technical communication. There is also an interdepartmental minor in media studies with Speech Communication. Curricular emphasis includes the role of mass media in society, electronic reporting; news-editorial writing; technical/specialized journalism; law and policy of communication technologies; and freedom of speech. Materials and courses support several diversity and area study programs.

Scope of Coverage

Language: Mainly English; some modern Western European languages and Latin.

Geographical: Primarily U.S. and Great Britain as well as Europe, including classical Greece and Rome.

Chronological: Generally current, with some materials on the classical period (500 BC) for oratory and elocution.

Publication types and levels: Current publications, both scholarly and trade. Selected classical works in the field.

Types of Materials

Monographs and periodicals, cassettes, selected indexes and databases. The personal papers of Carl Akers, a broadcast journalist for many years in Colorado, are held at Colorado State University, and are available for study in Special Collections and Archives.
