History: Collection Development Policy

Purpose

To collect, manage and provide access to library materials to support the academic and research programs of the History Department, which offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree (with concentrations in Liberal Arts and Social Studies Teaching) and master's degrees in history and public history. Curricular emphases include American, European, Russian, Latin American, African, East and South Asian, and Middle Eastern History. The department also teaches courses in world and transnational history, cultural history, environmental history, gender and women's history, and the history of religion, especially Islam. In the field of American History, emphasis is placed on the American West, borderlands history, African American, and Native American history. History materials support many other departments and programs, especially in the liberal arts, education, and natural resources. The collections in History also support diversity and interdisciplinary programs, including ethnic studies, international studies, women's studies, and American studies. Community interest in the Western American History materials has been of long standing.

Scope of Coverage

Language: English with some exceptions.

Geographic: Primarily United States and Europe. Emphasis in Western U.S. Recent expanded coverage of materials on Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Chronological: All periods, with emphasis on modern history.

Publication types and levels: Current publications from primarily university and scholarly presses. Trade publications from major publishers only. With few exceptions the journal list includes only most frequently indexed titles. Selected reprints of classical works in the field.

Types of Materials

Periodicals and monographs almost exclusively. U.S. Government publications, received by CSUL as a Federal Depository library, of interest to researchers include especially those published by the Office of Military History, the National Archives and Records Administration, the Library of Congress, the Department of State, the Office of the President and the United States Congress.
