To collect and provide access to library materials to support the teaching and research programs of the English Department. The department offers programs of study leading to the bachelor of arts, the master of arts and the master of fine arts, with concentrations in literature, teaching, or teaching English as a foreign or second language. In addition, an interdisciplinary program of study in communication development is offered in cooperation with the Department of Speech Communication and Journalism. The department also shares in a joint M.A. degree in foreign languages and the teaching of English as a second language. Curricular emphasis is on English and American literature, linguistics, creative writing and English as a second language. Courses and collections in Women's studies, Chicano, Afro-American and Contemporary Native American Literature support diversity programs and interests.
Language: English with few exceptions
Geographic: Emphasis on the United States and Great Britain, with representative literature and folklore from other countries or regions.
Chronological: Early Renaissance to modern.
Publication types and levels: Scholarly as well as trade publications. The instructional programs require vast amounts of readings, with selections from a wide variety of primary and secondary writers. Many authors need to be collected in depth, which requires acquiring a large collection of current and retrospective editions. Targeted areas include minority literature, Western American literature, science fiction and creative non-fiction.
The predominant focus is on monographs plus standard journals in the field. Both full text and citation data bases are playing an increasingly more important role, see under below.
