Art: Collection Development Policy

Purpose

To collect and provide access to library materials to support the teaching and research programs of the Art Department. The department offers programs of study leading to the bachelor of fine arts (with concentrations in drawing, fibers, graphic design, metalsmithing/jewelry, painting, photo image making, pottery, printmaking, and sculpture), bachelor of arts (with concentrations in art education, art history, and studio), and the master of fine arts (with specializations in drawing, fibers, graphic design, metalsmithing/jewelry, painting, printmaking, and sculpture). Curricular emphasis is on foundation courses in the freshman year, introductory concentration courses in the sophomore year and advanced topics in the junior and senior years.

Scope of Coverage

Language: English and some Multilanguage materials.

Geographic: Major emphasis is Western Europe and North America, with secondary emphasis in Latin America and Eastern Europe, then Africa, and finally United Kingdom, Asia, and the Pacific.

Chronological: All eras.

Publication types and levels: Scholarly as well as trade publications. Targeted areas include monographs and exhibition catalogs; Department guest critics and artists publications, artists’ correspondence, source documents, art theory publications- Hatje Cantz (or just Hatje), DuMont Verlag, Peto Lang Verlag, Akademische Druck u. Verlagsanstalt (Mexican codices- facsimiles), studio art and art education methodology.

Types of Materials

The predominant focus is on monographs plus standard journals in the field. Both full text and citation databases are playing an increasingly more important role, see below.
