Fantastic Animations of Cellular Processes

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research has produced real time animations of cellular and molecular processes. These include titles such as Recombinant DNA, DNA Chromosome Wrapping, Malaria, and The Science of Cancer. One animation that is particularly impressive is of DNA replication shown from several angles. You will require QuickTime on your computer in order to view the animations, it is available for free download here.

Another particularly impressive cell biology animation comes from the President and Fellows of Harvard College and is available at http://aimediaserver.com/studiodaily/harvard/harvard.swf. This animation requires Flash Player, available for free here.

Image Library, Worth a Second Look

Electron micrograph of a cell

This is a really cool image library, take another look!

The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) has launched an Image and Video Library of peer-reviewed micrographs and videos related to cell biology. "Access to the library is free and open for non-commercial educational and research uses. Users can download any and all images and videos for non-commercial purposes" (ASCB About Us). The Image and Video Library is also accepting submission for the library.

(This entree was originally posted on October 31, 2006 but was only in a "prime time" slot for a few hours. The site and the images are very neat and worth a second promotion.)

Training Opportunity for Bioscience Faculty

The National Science Digital Library (NSDL) is sponsoring a workshop for undergraduate educators in the Biological Sciences. Participants will receive training in integrating the use of digital libraries into classrooms. The workshop will take place from December 7-10, 2006 in Washington, D.C. and participants will receive travel support as well as a small stipend.

"The National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Biological Sciences Pathway invites undergraduate faculty in the biological sciences to apply to become BiosciEdNet (BEN) Scholars. The BEN Scholars Program is one of the grassroots outreach activities of the BEN Collaborative. BEN Scholars will promote the use of digital libraries and inquiry-based learning in higher education biological sciences lecture and laboratory courses." quoted from BEN "

NIH VideoCasting

The National Institute of Health (NIH) is making NIH lectures, seminars, and conferences freely available on the web via videocasts. To view the webcasts your computer must have an updated version of RealPlayer which is available for free here . Upcoming videocasts can be seen live and include broadcasts for the Frontiers in Live Cell Imaging meeting (April 19-21, 2006) and Linking Molecular Motors to Signaling and Neurodegenerative Disease presented by Dr. Larry Goldstein (May 8, 2006). Recent videocasts are available as archives. There are 2864 videocasts on file; recent titles include Host-Pathogen Interactions as Competitive Genomics: Immunologic Challenges of Tuberculosis, presented by Carl Nathan and NIH's New Electronic Grant Application Process and the SF424 (R+R) Afternoon Session. Archived videocasts are available here.

New Microbial Bioinformatics Database

The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute has launched a new genomic database. The records currently include the full genomes of several Oomycetes and preparations are already underway to add Fungal Genomes and Bacterial Genomes. The database is searchable by Gene ID number, protein domain, or EST ID. This database also allows the users to perform BLAST searches. The VBI Microbial Database is available at http://phytophthora.vbi.vt.edu/.

Biology Search Engines

Elsevier and Thomson ISI each offer free online, science-specific search engines. Biology Browser is the Thomson product and indexes websites that are of interest to researchers in the life sciences. Biology Browser is searchable by organism, geographic region or subject. Scirus claims to be "the most comprehensive science-specific search engine on the Internet....Scirus searches over 250 million science-specific Web pages." Scirus is particularly strong on patent searches.
