James W. Lawrence, 1891 - 1892

Interim Presidents of Colorado State University

James W. LawrenceLawrence began his thirty-four-year tenure at the College in 1883.  He was hired to direct the mechanical engineering program, and during his first year at the school he supervised the construction of a new mechanic shop for the program.  He also played a key role in accommodating the mandatory daily labor requirement for students at the College.  Under his supervision student labor assumed many of the functions of a buildings and grounds crew.  Because of his building expertise and supervisory experience, Lawrence was often called upon by the Board to participate in the planning and construction of new campus buildings.  When Charles L. Ingersoll resigned in 1891, the State Board of Agriculture appointed Lawrence to serve as acting president until a permanent replacement could be employed.
