Blount came to Colorado State Agricultural College in 1879 to serve as farm manager. In June of that year, he was given the additional post of professor of practical agriculture. During 1880 Blount was freed of his duties as farm superintendent and allowed to concentrate on teaching and research. He soon found himself presiding over a newly created Experimental Department, where he conducted pioneering research involving crops suitable to Colorado. Blount was also an early advocate of locating agricultural experiment stations in various parts of Colorado as a way of dealing with the state's tremendous physical diversity. During his tenure at the College, his efforts did much to advance the agricultural program. When Elijah Evan Edwards suddenly resigned on April 7, 1882, the State Board of Agriculture appointed Blount to serve as acting president until a permanent replacement could be employed.
