Scope and Contents

The Papers of Robert K. Davis consists of documents dated 1926-2000, with the bulk falling from 1980-1999. The collection contains papers, notes, background documents, and publications related primarily to projects Davis was involved with in the 1980s and 1990s. While the collection does not fully document Davis's work during that time period, it does reflect some of his research, writing, presentations, and advisory and other professional activities. More than half of the collection pertains to water-related materials, including his California work on the Imperial Irrigation District and the Arvin-Edison Water Storage District, and his Colorado work on a salinity study in Sager's Wash. Much of the remainder of the collection reflects his studies on emphasis on hunting, wildlife and wildlife management. Davis's involvement in some international projects, particularly in Africa and Australia, is also documented.

Series Descriptions

Series I: Professional activities, 1970-1997 and undated (1.25 linear feet)

This series, largely a contrived one that includes more general files dealing with Davis's professional activities, is divided into five general subgroups: Curriculum vitae, resume; Correspondence; Professional activities, committees, conferences, studies, etc.; Teaching, University of Colorado; and, Visiting professor, Ohio State University. While the first two are fairly straightforward groupings, the third includes a variety of materials that document service activities, research, writing, presentations and other miscellaneous topics. The subgroup on teaching at the University of Colorado includes notes, syllabus and related materials pertaining to his teaching of Environmental Economics there in 1996. The last subgroup related to his sabbaticals at Ohio State University documents some of the work done during his time there, while other research from this sabbatical is part of Series II. Materials are arranged alphabetically within each subgroup.

Series II: Riparian and water issues/projects, 1926-1996 and undated (3.75 linear feet)

This series contains work related to riparian and water issues and is divided into seven subgroups: California; California, Arvin-Edison Water Storage District; Colorado, Sager's Wash; Colorado water; Riparian projects; Water, other; and, Water, United States Corps of Engineers, Institute for Water Resources. Several specific research efforts are reflected within this series, as well as some more general interests/projects. The first two are based on Davis's sabbatical at the University of California, Davis and include work on the Imperial Irrigation District, as well as the Arvin-Edison Water Storage District. The Sager's Wash work involved a salinity study. The section on Colorado water includes more general information on a range of Colorado water issues. The section "Water, other" contains a miscellaneous group of files that did not fit well within other headings. The information for the Institute for Water Resources resulted from a contract to evaluate environmental and flood mitigation benefits of riverine wetlands. Materials are arranged alphabetically within each subgroup.

Series III: Hunters, hunter access and ranching for wildlife, 1948-1999 and undated (2.5 linear feet)

This series reflects Davis's research and writing on hunting, access to wildlife, and wildlife ranching in Colorado and other western areas and is divided into four general subgroups: Grazing; Hunter access, access to public lands; Wildlife and wildlife ranching; and, Wildlife ranching, Colorado. The several subgroups on hunting and wildlife ranching reflect Davis's research and writing on wildlife-oriented recreation on public and private lands, particularly focused on hunting and the market for hunting on private lands. Materials are arranged alphabetically within each subgroup.

Series IV: International activities, 1992-2000 and undated (1.5 linear feet)

This series is divided into six general subgroups: Africa, Botswana/Namibia; Africa, East Africa/CRSP; Africa Tanzania; Africa, Zimbabwe; Argentina; Australia. Divided by country, this series reflects some of the contributions Davis made on the international level. The Botswana/Namibia work deals with water issues related to a water master plan. The East Africa subgroup reflects Davis's work as part of the Collaborative Research Support Program, USAID-CRSP on wildlife economics and pastoral-wildlife interactions. Additional work on pastoral-wildlife interactions are contained in the Tanzania subgroup, including work on the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Davis served as consultant on the CAMPFIRE project in Zimbabwe, and this subgroup documents the project and Davis's evaluation of it. In Argentina Davis presented a paper titled "Wildlife Industries in a Changing World" and this subgroup contains materials relevant to that presentation. The Australia subgroup reflects Davis's examination of wildlife management policies for kangaroos. Materials are arranged alphabetically within each subgroup.
