Morton W. Bittinger was born at Marathon, Iowa, on August 14, 1927. He received both a Bachelor of Science degree (1949) and a Master of Science degree (1951) in Agricultural Engineering from Iowa State University. In 1967 he received a Doctorate in Civil Engineering from Utah State University. Mr. Bittinger married Carolyn Wiese on December 26, 1948, from whom he was later divorced. They had three children, Cathleen, Ruth, and Thomas. He died in Boulder, Colorado, on October 29, 2001.

Mr. Bittinger published several books on issues of groundwater, including You Never Miss the Water Till...: The Ogallala Story, in 1980, which is available in the Morgan Library of CSU.

Scope and Contents

The Papers of Morton W. Bittinger consists of documents dated 1951 to 1982, with the bulk falling from 1960 to 1967. The documents consist of magazine and journal articles and reprints of articles concerning developments in groundwater technology, authored or co-authored by Morton W. Bittinger. Bound volumes of Bittinger's thesis and dissertation are also included. The dissertation was presented at the ASCE Annual Meeting and National Meeting on Water Resources Engineering, in New Orleans, Louisiana, in February 1969.

Arrangement

The articles are arranged according to subject matter. The first folder contains a list of publications authored or co-authored by Bittinger. The second contains a copy of the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute's "Technical Report No. 13," with a final report entitled "Impact of Irrigation Efficiency Improvements on Water Availability in the South Platte River Basin," co-authored by Bittinger. Folders three and four contain either reprints or copies of articles from professional journals. Folder five contains copies of papers prepared for presentation at various conferences on groundwater issues. The two bound volumes are filed at the end. The collection is contained in one box.
