The present site, released June 2005, is part of the Western Waters Digital Library. The initial phase of this project, a two-year effort launched in 2003 and led by the Greater Western Library Alliance, was funded with a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Text of original reports was scanned and saved in TIFF format. Optical character recognition (OCR) was performed by opening the TIFF files in Scansoft's OmniPage Pro and using its blocking and OCR tools, and the results were saved as text files. The TIFF files were used to generate compound objects in CONTENTdm, a digital collection management database application. This process included automatic generation of access and thumbnail images and incorporation of the text files as searchable transcripts at the page level. CONTENTdm also contains Dublin Core metadata (descriptive, administrative, and structural information) about each of the digital objects.
