Bus Trips and Fly-Ins

Farmers Union members have long recognized the importance of state and federal legislation in supporting and promoting the continued prosperity of family farms. Shortly after World War II, members of the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union began chartering buses and traveling to the nation’s capital to speak with their senators and representatives about bills that would have an impact upon farmers and their livelihood.

After 1954, the bus trips were gradually replaced by “fly-ins” as farmers began to utilize this more efficient means of transportation across the country. In addition to meeting with their legislators in Washington, members of the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union have participated with government on the local level and discussed important farm legislation with their state lawmakers.
