Recalls - Frequently Asked Questions

What is a recall?

A recall is a request for the return of a borrowed book. In most cases, the original due date of the recalled item is adjusted. A notification is sent either by email or postal mail to inform the library user of the adjusted due date. We highly recommend that patrons register their email to receive quick notification.

How do recalls work?

Library materials are guaranteed for a minimum two-week loan period with the exception of bound journals (2 days) and branch materials (1 week). Library users may place a recall on these checked-out items at any time. The placement of a recall allows SAGE to adjust the due date to ensure that the patron has ten days to return the item or that the minimum loan period is enforced (i.e. If an item is recalled from the day it is checked out, the due date will either change to reflect the guaranteed two-week loan period or remain the same in the case of bound journals, branch materials, maps, and storage journals). Once the recalled item is turned in, it is checked-in and placed on the hold-shelf for the patron who recalled the item.

Why do recalls exist?

The library has a limited amount of resources which are shared by the entire community. Recalls exist to provide fair and equal access to these resources.

How do I recall something?

The quickest and most accurate way to recall items is through the online library catalog. (For more information, visit the "Requesting Books from SAGE" Tutorial).

My library item has been recalled, but I really need it. What can I do?

Recalled items may be kept until the adjusted due date (this date is shown on the recall notice). If it is anticipated that the item will be needed again, the item may be counter-recalled once it has been checked-in. Remember however, that the next patron will be given time to receive notification and will be able to check out the item for its guaranteed loan-period. Additionally, more than one library patron may want this particular item and may be next in the queue to receive the item. CSU students, faculty, and staff may attempt to request recalled items from a Prospector library but must keep in mind that certain Prospector items may not be available for circulation.

What happens if I don't bring a recalled library item back and it becomes overdue?

If a recalled item is not returned to the library within ten days of the recall date (provided the guaranteed loan period has been fulfilled), a non-refundable rate of $5.00 per-item for the first day and $2.50 per-item per-day thereafter will be charged up to a maximum fine of $25.00 per-item.
