Democracy

  • United States of America (History)
    a web page providing links for doing research on the History of the U.S., provided by CSU Librarian Naomi Lederer.

  • History of Democracy
    from the Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia which has the unique feature of collaborative authorship.
  • America's Historical Documents
    digital images of the founding documents provided by the National Archives. Included on this site are copies of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Women’s Right to Vote, and the Emancipation Proclamation.
  • Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America
    a project of the American Studies Programs at The University of Virginia, re-contextualizing Alexis de Tocqueville's famous political and cultural analysis of American democracy.

Freedom

  • National Endowment for Democracy
    a private, nonprofit organization created in 1983 to strengthen democratic institutions around the world through nongovernmental efforts. The Endowment is guided by the belief that freedom is a universal human aspiration that can be realized through the development of democratic institutions, procedures, and values.

  • American Memory
    provides free and open access through the Internet to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps and sheet music that document the American experience.

  • Sign the Declaration of Independence
    an interactive site from the National Archives which lets you add your "John Hancock" to the Declaration of Independence.

September 11

In commemoration of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 the Colorado State University Libraries is proud to take part in The September Project, a collection of over 700 libraries in all 50 states and many countries worldwide, hosting events to celebrate freedom, democracy and active citizenship. Libraries play a vital role in civic engagement in our society by providing information to citizens and a place to share ideas. CSU Libraries has a commitment to that role.

The CSU Libraries’ September Project includes:

Visit Morgan Library's Democracy at Your Library display from Sept. 11 - Sept. 30 to get engaged:

  • Exercise Your Right to Vote: Voice your opinion on library services and register to win a $50 gift certificate to the CSU bookstore. The drawing for the gift certificate will take place on October 1st, 2007.

  • Pick up a Voter Registration form
  • Research Ballot Issues and Candidates
  • Visit the Constitution Day Display (Sept. 10-21) to checkout books and learn about US founding documents on the first floor of Morgan Library across from the Loan & Reserve desk.
  • Checkout Books & Research Government Documents

The display will be up throughout the month of September on the first floor of the Morgan Library across from the Loan/Reserve desk. The display is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Cathy Cranston, 970-491-1906.
