As an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past, many have long desired online access to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).
Now, CSU Libraries will make the OED available online to CSU affiliates. Quick to access and easy to use, the OED Online will provide CSU students and faculty with unprecedented access to the 20-volume Second Edition and 3 Additions Series volumes, plus at least 1,800 new and revised words each quarter.
Now everything from simple word look-ups to sophisticated Boolean searching, using any of the fields in the Dictionary, can be done with speed and ease from computer labs, offices, and dorms.
"This is just one more way the Libraries is working to bring resources to our patron's fingertips," notes Patricia Smith, Coordinator for Collections and Contracts at CSU Libraries.
"The Oxford English Dictionary online has been one of the most sought after resources," notes Naomi Lederer, College Liaison Librarian for the College of Liberal Arts. “Ever since the OED went online I’ve had faculty and student requests for it. There are many advantages to having this valuable resource online. Online it is available remotely and 24/7. The advanced searching features mean it can be searched in ways not imagined in print. For example (and these are just a few of them), researchers can find out how many words end with a given suffix; search for words that start with root letters; or if they don’t know the word they are looking for, they can look for it using keywords from its definition.”
This long-anticipated acquisition was made possible this fall through the careful allocation of the Libraries' serials budget. Recognizing the importance of online access to resources, the Libraries now spends nearly two thirds of its materials budget on electronic resources. Recent private donations as well as partnerships with consortia have enabled CSU Libraries to leverage monies and purchase more of these highly desired and highly costly items.
"Making these resources available electronically will enable faculty and students to access materials when and where they are most needed—in the lab and classroom—at the moment of research and discovery," notes Smith.
"Our goal is to keep pace with faculty and student demands to accelerate learning and innovation."
