Happy Holidays showcases a sampling of holiday greeting cards from the Papers of Charles Lory, University President from 1909-1940. The cards range in date from 1917 to 1962 and include a variety of styles representative of the 1920’s, 30’s, 50’s, and 60’s. There are also several unique cards such as copper cards from New Mexico and a card made from a parchment deed from 17th century England.
The Bookbindings exhibit gives a brief history of both hand binding and publishers binding and includes examples from our rare books collection. Representative of hand bookbinding is a “Koberger” style binding from 1492 featuring tooled leather and brass clasps. Vellum and goatskin bindings from 1590 and 1773 are included as well. The publishers bookbindings on display range from the simple cloth binding of the early 1800’s to the elaborate, gilt lettered binding of the 1890’s.
